Lėnas has two prominent landmarks: Lake Lėnas and the local parish church of St. Anthony of Padua. The lake covers 265.2 hectares and is classified as a lake of national importance. Its shores are low-lying and marshy in places; the Lėnas Forest lies southwest of the lake. The town thus brings together ecclesiastical cultural heritage and a distinctive lake and forest landscape.

Lake, landscape and protected areas

The lake can be described in terms of its area and the character of its shores. The Taujėnai–Užulėnis Forest Biosphere Polygon offers a different perspective: it was established in 2004 and covers 22,531 hectares. It protects populations of the black stork, lesser spotted eagle, crane, grey-headed woodpecker, middle spotted woodpecker and white-backed woodpecker. At Lake Lėnas, the focus is on the lake’s area and shore profile; in the biosphere polygon, it is on the designated area and the protected bird populations.

Church and historic sites

The parish church of St. Anthony of Padua is in Lėnas. Another memorial site lies between Lėnas and Taujėnai: an obelisk commemorating Lithuanian partisans stands halfway between the two places. These are two distinct landmarks—one right in the town, the other between Lėnas and Taujėnai.

A biographical connection leads to Užulėnis, south of Lake Lėnas. President Antanas Smetona was born there. The main façade of the nearby manor house of President Antanas Smetona faces Lake Lėnas. The birthplace and the building’s orientation toward the lake thus offer two concrete links to Smetona’s story: where he was born and how a building faces the lake.

Užugirio Manor Estate is another cultural heritage landmark in its own right. In 1992, it was designated an architectural, historical and landscape heritage site of regional importance. The restored Užugirio Manor in Užugiris includes a museum about Antanas Smetona, office buildings, a former servant’s house and a cowshed. The listed buildings therefore include the museum, office buildings and historic service and farm buildings.
