Discover Švenčionys
Accommodation in Švenčionys
Švenčionys brings together the city’s history, crafts and remembrance with tangible cultural insights. If you are planning a stay, you can organise your interests around distinct themes: the Nalšios Museum showcases local history and everyday culture; churches and buildings listed in the Cultural Heritage Register offer insights into different historical periods; and herbal tea production and baking bring local traditions to life. The commemoration of Holocaust victims from the city and region is also part of the area’s history. These highlights can help you decide whether Švenčionys is right for a culturally and historically focused trip.
Museum: city history, crafts and digital exhibitions
The Nalšios Museum brings together more than 62,000 archaeological, natural history, historical and ethnographic objects. Its collection therefore spans a wide range of subjects, while its exhibitions focus on more specific themes. The history exhibition introduces the history of Švenčionys in the 19th and 20th centuries. The ethnography exhibition presents local crafts and trades, including flax processing, lace and textiles. This allows you to choose between a time-specific approach to the city’s history and a look at practical skills and materials. Virtual exhibitions complement the collection with two-dimensional and 360° photo galleries, as well as video footage. Still images, panoramic views and videos are presented as different digital formats.
Churches and historical periods
The All Saints’ Church in Švenčionys was built in 1898 and renovated in 2000. Nine buildings in the city dating from the late 19th to the early 20th century are listed in the Cultural Heritage Register. The church’s dates clearly distinguish its construction from its renovation, while the nine listed buildings represent a broader period of the city’s architecture. The Old Believers’ Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God offers a much earlier historical connection: it contains a Gospel from the first quarter of the 17th century. This places architectural history alongside a religious book dating from a different era.
Herbal tea and baking
Švenčionys has a tradition of herbal tea production centred on Švenčionių vaistažolių fabrikas. Founded in 1883, the factory continues to produce medicinal teas for the local market and for export. Its historic founding date and ongoing production go hand in hand; herbal tea is not just a subject of the past, but part of continuing production. A different craft specialisation is represented by Janė Petkūnienė, a certified baker of national cultural heritage who specialises in yeast cakes and breads made with various ingredients. In this way, ongoing factory production and a baker specialising in particular baked goods represent two distinct local profiles.
Commemoration of Holocaust victims
A distinct historical focus is the commemoration of the 8,000 Holocaust victims from Švenčionys and the region who were murdered in October 1941. A wooden menorah sculpture has been used as a memorial site in the town square, and a memorial plaque was unveiled on a nearby house at Vilniaus gatvė 5. These details connect a specific historical turning point with named forms of remembrance.
