Two themes are central to a trip to Aluona: the settlement’s history and its surroundings, shaped by a river, lakes, and a nature reserve. The Aluona River flows near Aluona; the lakes Luknos and Ilgučio are also near the settlement. Aluona is also next to the Trakai–Rūdiškės road. When planning your trip, you can decide in advance whether to focus on local history or nature.

River, Lakes, and Nature Reserve

The Ilgučio Botanical Reserve is near Aluona and covers 60 hectares. Established in 1960, it protects Lake Ilgučio, the surrounding forests, and the habitats of rare plant species. Its conservation purpose brings together waterways, forest, and plant life, while its stated area gives the reserve a clear, concrete scale. Those interested in nature and plant conservation will find a clear point of interest here.

Historical Traces from Settlement to Manor

Aluona is considered an old Lithuanian settlement and is mentioned in accounts from the early 15th century in connection with Vytautas’s wars against the Teutonic Knights. An inventory from 1735 describes the property of Aluona Manor. Historical inventories also mention a small pond on the Aluona stream and a mill. These records range from early mentions of the settlement to descriptions of the manor.

In 1794, Aluona had a wooden chapel belonging to the parish of Senieji Trakai. In 1829, the abandoned chapel was moved from Aluona to Paluknys, where the Chapel of Saint John the Baptist was built. This sequence connects a specific location with the chapel’s later relocation.

Burial Ground and Archaeological Finds

About 200 meters east of Aluona lies the Raistinė burial site, also known as Aluona Barrow Cemetery or the Swedish Graves. It is a national archaeological monument and is listed in the Cultural Heritage Register under code 3524. The site comprises 16 burial mounds; five have been flattened and ploughed. Their forms are considered characteristic of the 9th to 12th centuries. The number five describes the condition of part of the site, while the date range places its characteristic forms in context.

Another archaeological trace is the Aluona–Šklėriai hoard. It was discovered in 1929, while a road between Aluona and Šklėriai was being repaired. The “Pasivaikščiojimas po Rūdiškes” sightseeing route is associated with the Rūdiškės area.

Interests to Consider When Planning Your Trip

The Raistas educational trail also offers a point of interest in the area. It is on private land and has shelters with barbecue areas suitable for picnics. As access rules on private land can change, check access before your visit.

If you are choosing between cultural history and nature when planning your trip, the different themes can help guide you: Aluona’s history can be explored through early mentions, the manor, and the chapel; the burial ground adds an archaeological site with an approximate distance and a typological classification. Those interested in nature, on the other hand, can focus on the river, lakes, and the reserve’s conservation purpose. To search for a hotel for your trip, you can start with this choice of focus and consider which themes you want to shape your stay in Aluona.
