Kaniūkai offers two clear starting points for planning a trip: archaeological evidence in the village and the Šalčia Water Route. It is also located on the southeastern edge of the Rūdnininkai Forest. If you choose a destination with historical significance or for a water tour, you can weigh these aspects separately: the village’s history leads to hillforts and natural heritage, while the route becomes tangible through a suggested starting point and a specifically named 25-kilometre option.

Archaeological Evidence and Natural Heritage

At the western edge of Kaniūkai stands a hillfort measuring 9 metres in diameter and 1.5 metres in height. These measurements convey its size and height. Archaeological evidence points to human settlement in Kaniūkai from the 9th to the 12th century. Several damaged hillfort remains also form part of the village’s archaeological picture. Taken together, these details offer more than a single archaeological point of interest: they include a measured hillfort, evidence of settlement and other damaged burial-mound remains.

The Kaniūkų Stone was designated natural heritage on 27 March 1964 by an order of the Nature Conservation Committee under the Council of Ministers of the Lithuanian SSR. The history of the buildings also includes the fact that almost all residential houses and most farm buildings burned down. The archaeological evidence, the designation of the stone and the history of the buildings offer different ways to explore Kaniūkai’s past.

Forest Setting and the Šalčia Water Route

Kaniūkai lies on the southeastern edge of the Rūdnininkai Forest, and the Šalčia Water Route winds through the forest. The forest edge gives the village its setting, while the water route offers a distinct connection to the landscape. Kaniūkai is suggested as a starting point for the route. It is intended for fans of short outings; one specifically named option covers 25 kilometres from Kaniūkai through Gerviškės to Žygmantiškės. The sequence of places gives you a concrete route to compare with your own touring plans, in addition to the distance.

On some sections, you will need to navigate bends and avoid fallen trees. As obstacles may change, check current conditions before setting out and do not plan based solely on the distance. Two rest areas are on the right bank of the Šalčia, before Žygmantiškės. So, in addition to the route’s length, there is specific information about obstacles and the location of rest areas that you can take into account when planning your outing. Žygmantiškės is a reference point for locating places along the described option: it appears in the route sequence, and the rest areas are upstream of it on the right bank of the river.
