Elektrėnai Municipality: Nature, the Neris and Culture
Accommodation in Elektrėnai Municipality
Part of Neris Regional Park lies within Elektrėnai Municipality. The park stretches along both sides of the Neris through the territories of Elektrėnai and Vilnius municipalities. For a closer look at the landscape, the Pipiriškės Geomorphological Reserve is a particular highlight: it covers 519 hectares and is a good place to explore a complex of glacial marginal formations typical of the Dzūkija Upland.
Landscapes, viewpoints and protected areas
Abromiškės Manor Park is also among the protected landscapes. It was placed under state protection in 1985 and designated a natural monument in 1986. At Ausiutiškės, a viewing tower offers a panorama of the Neris Valley. From there, you can also see the start of the Velniakampis Loop of the Neris, considered the largest loop on the 510-kilometre-long river. The Grabijolų outcrop adds a geological point of interest: it is about 100 metres long and about 6 metres high, and fossils can be found in its exposed layers.
Nature trail and cycling route
The Grabijolų Nature Trail is a “wild” footpath from the ethnographic street village of Grabijolų kaimas to the Alkų Oak, considered the thickest oak in Neris Regional Park. Along the way, you pass Saldus Stream, the Uolkas or Alkų mounds, the foundations of the former Zapalina Manor, Paalkių Hill and the Neris with its mythological stones. The route thus brings together a variety of landscape and cultural traces in a single walk.
For a two-wheeled tour, try “Around Elektrėnai”: the route is 14 kilometres long, with a stated duration of 6.5 hours. Ninety percent is on asphalt and 10 percent on forest tracks. These details can help you weigh up the distance, time and surface together when planning.
Water and activities
Guided boat trips are offered on the Elektrėnai Lagoon. The beach on the lagoon is popular with windsurfers because the winds there are stronger and more consistent than on other lakes. Other water sports and leisure activities are also popular there. The floating pontoon landing stage in Elektrėnai invites you to relax and enjoy nature; it stands out for its design and lighting.
The AWAY wakeboard park is located at Rungos g. 13 in Elektrėnai. For a different kind of activity, visit Elektrėnai Disc Golf Park: the aim is to throw a flying disc from the starting point into the basket in as few throws as possible. Each subsequent throw is taken from where the previous one landed.
“Vaikų pasaulis” in Elektrėnai offers opportunities to relax in nature and enjoy active leisure, as well as views of the Elektrėnai Lagoon. The grounds include walking and cycling paths, two skate or scooter parks, an amphitheatre and areas with outdoor fitness equipment.
Museums and other leisure activities
Since 1 January 2024, the Elektrėnai Regional Museum has been housed in the restored Abromiškės granary. It features a distinctive collection of sculptures by folk artist Ipolitas Užkurnys (1926–2004). Another museum is dedicated to ice hockey: established in 2014, it presents the history of the ice arena’s construction as well as numerous trophies won by Elektrėnai teams. At the ice arena, you can skate or watch ice hockey and figure skating competitions.
Elektrėnai’s interactive, modern and technology-based learning and cultural offering is aimed at users from Lithuania and abroad. It provides information about significant and unique cultural heritage sites in the municipality. Advance registration is required for guided tours at the Centre for Information about the Earth’s Interior in Vievis.
Elektrėnai Swimming Pool has a 50-metre sports pool with eight lanes. The building also has a sauna complex with Finnish and steam saunas, as well as a heated pool with a cascade and underwater currents. As facilities may change during operation, check current availability in advance if you are planning a specific visit.
