Pakruojis District Municipality can be explored through its preserved architecture, forest trails, and geological and archaeological sites. When choosing where to stay, it helps to consider the different highlights: the manor combines architectural history with guided tours, educational programs and culinary offerings; in Rozalimas, the forest and landscape take center stage.

Manor and synagogue: different chapters of architectural history

The Pakruojis Synagogue is Lithuania’s oldest surviving wooden synagogue and was built in 1801. It was restored and opened in 2017. Its construction date and later restoration and reopening mark two distinct stages in its history.

The Pakruojis Manor estate is considered Lithuania’s largest surviving manor estate. It covers more than 48 hectares and has 34 buildings; these include a restored dolomite arch bridge. Guided tours and educational programs are offered at the manor. It is advisable to check specific programs and dates in advance. The manor’s “Traktierius” inn serves special creations inspired by the local culinary heritage.

Forest trails and geological formations

Rozalimo Forest Park has recreation trails, wooden boardwalks, parking areas, fire pits, and observation platforms for viewing the forest’s biodiversity. It combines trails through the forest with opportunities to observe its diversity from the platforms.

The Rozalimo educational trail is about 4 km long. There are 18 information boards along the entire route, as well as newly established rest areas. The Lapgirių oza esker can also be seen on the trail. Along the way, you will encounter both information about the route and a named landscape feature.

Another geological landmark is the Raudonpamūšio outcrop: it extends for 35 m along the steep left bank of the Mūša and is 4 m high. The district thus offers distinct nature experiences, from observing the forest to visiting a precisely described outcrop on a riverbank.

Archaeological context

The Peleniškiai hillfort dates from the 1st millennium to the 13th century. It lies 3 km east of Pašvitinys, near the village of Peleniškiai. Its dating reaches far back before the Pakruojis Synagogue was built in 1801: the archaeological period and the dated building offer different historical perspectives.

More highlights in the wider Šiauliai District destination

Beyond Pakruojis District Municipality, the wider Šiauliai District destination offers other distinct cultural and museum experiences. The Photography Museum is Lithuania’s only specialized museum dedicated to the history of photography, photographic art, and photographic technology. The Bicycle Museum is Lithuania’s only specialized museum dedicated to the history of the bicycle; visitors can try road cycling in its third-floor exhibition. Together, the two museums offer different perspectives on photography and bicycle history.

The Chaimo Frenkel Villa is one of Lithuania’s few Art Nouveau buildings from the early 20th century. At the Chaimo Frenkel Villa Museum, the “Fabrikantai Frenkeliai” exhibition presents two generations of the Frenkel family and the history of the Jews in Šiauliai. The Hill of Crosses is also among the highlights of Šiauliai District: it is an important religious site, visited by Pope John Paul II on September 7, 1993.
