Along the shore of Lake Giliaus, a 3.3-kilometre nature trail follows a shoreline that is constantly changing. In Kražiai, there is a late Baroque church; in Tytuvėnai, a monastery complex and an exhibition tell stories of art and nature; and in Kelmė, a protected manor complex is a defining feature of the cultural heritage. Kelmė District Municipality thus offers different starting points for your trip—from landscapes and activities to religious and regional history.

Kražiai: Church and Educational History

The twin-towered Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Kražiai was built in the late Baroque style between 1757 and 1763. Throughout Lithuania, it is considered a symbol of the defence of Catholicism and Lithuanian identity. Tourists can visit the church; as visiting arrangements may change, it is advisable to check before your visit.

The former Jesuit collegiate school offers another historical perspective. It was founded in 1616 as Žemaitija’s most important educational and religious centre. The surviving building of the former collegiate school dates from the beginning of the 17th century. The buildings therefore offer a view of two distinct historical periods: the preserved school building and the church built later.

Tytuvėnai: Lakeside Trail, Lakes and Monastery Complex

Lake Giliaus is distinguished by its distinctive colour and the diversity of its plants and animals. The nature trail by the lake is 3.3 kilometres long and follows the changing shoreline. At the Tytuvėnai Regional Park Visitor Centre, you can find information about the park’s attractions, protected features and services. The centre’s “From the Flight of the Crane” exhibition includes a film about cranes, a crane’s nest, a beaver lodge and bird calls. It also displays various objects recovered from the depths of Lakes Giliaus and Bridvaišis.

The church and monastery complex of Tytuvėnai is described as an original art monument in the art-historical context of northeastern Europe, owing to its artistic appearance and combination of architectural styles. Nature and culture offer different interests here: the lakeside trail turns your attention to the landscape, while the complex provides an architectural-historical perspective.

For an active experience, the wake park on Lake Bridvaišis in Tytuvėnai offers wakeboarding. The visitor centre also offers an educational activity about forests and forest ecosystems. Topics include forest spirits, forest sounds, birds, forest use and edible forest products. Activities, equipment availability and educational programmes may change; if you are planning specifically around one of them, check current availability in advance.

Užventis and Kelmė: Museum and Manor

The Užventis Regional History Museum has been housed in the restored granary of Užventis Manor since 1973. It presents material on the history of the town. Bookable educational programmes include activities where you can make soap or mint a coin yourself. Check programme availability in advance if you would like to plan your visit around one.

The Kelmė Manor complex is a state-protected cultural heritage site and is considered a rare surviving Lithuanian manor estate in the Baroque style. The Kelmė Manor Museum presents Lithuania’s only exhibition on the culture of the Indigenous peoples of the Americas. If this particular exhibition is a key reason for your trip, check its current presentation in advance.

Natural Heritage and Spiritual Experiences

Kubiliai Hill, also known as Birutkalnis, dates from the 1st millennium to the beginning of the 2nd millennium. The nature route through Kelmė District includes eight unique natural heritage sites; the route may be revised. Check the latest route information before planning a tour.

Anyone can enter the monastery church in Palendriai and pray alongside the monks. In Butkiškės, the Naujoji Gokula community holds various camps, retreats and well-known Vaishnava festivals every year. If you would like to plan your trip around a particular festival or activity, confirm the current dates in advance.
