Piniava: Museum, Beach and Hotels
Accommodation in Piniava
Piniava offers a range of things to see and do: the private collection at Klementas Sakalauskas’ homestead and the beach, with sports courts, a barbecue area and tables. The museum offers a look at musical instruments and antiques, while sports and outdoor activities are at the heart of what the beach has to offer. For planning your visit, the key points are arranging an appointment at the museum and checking the latest information about the bus route.
Collections at Klementas Sakalauskas’ homestead
Grammophones, irons, jugs, churns and spinning wheels are on display in a purpose-built building constructed in 2005. The private collection brings together musical instruments and antiques with objects from various areas of everyday life. The selection spans listening, clothing care, storage and handicrafts. If you are interested in several types of objects, you will find not just a single collection area here, but a range of topics under one roof.
The musical instrument collection is described as one of the largest private collections of its kind in the Baltics. It also includes an Edison phonograph, described as the world’s first sound-recording device. This description makes the device a special point of interest within the collection: it draws attention to the history of sound recording, while other items illustrate quite different aspects of collecting.
Other objects include a NASH car, manufactured in the USA in 1931 and brought from there to Lithuania, as well as a dinosaur egg. The egg is said to be 70 to 80 million years old. The car and the egg represent two very different themes: the NASH links a specific year of manufacture with a journey from the USA to Lithuania, while the egg offers a glimpse into the distant history of the Earth. Together with the musical instruments and everyday objects, they make for a wide-ranging collection.
The Klemento Sakalausko senienų muziejus is located at Saulėtekio g. 7 in Piniava. Visits are available by prior arrangement. If you would like to include the museum in your travel plans, be sure to arrange a time in advance.
Beach, bus connection and dining
The beach in Piniava has volleyball, football and basketball courts, as well as a barbecue area and tables. The beach is maintained by Silvija Katinaitė-Kavaliūnienė. The beach facilities are quite different from the collections in the museum: here, sports areas and a barbecue area take centre stage, while the museum focuses on historical and everyday objects. As the facilities may change, check their condition before your visit.
Bus route 15 connects Dariaus-and-Girėno Street with Piniava. If you plan to use this service, check the operator’s latest route information before travelling. The route and its endpoints provide a guide for your journey, but do not replace checking the current route.
The “CORDO.22” restaurant is located at Pamarliškių g. 22 in Piniava. Before visiting, check whether the restaurant is currently open.
