Discover Dovilai
Accommodation in Dovilai
Dovilai can be explored through a variety of themes: architectural history, the history of defense, public art, waterside recreation and cycling. Notable destinations include the Evangelical Lutheran church and the castle hill; activities in the open air take center stage on the lakeshore and at Dovilų karjerai. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus mainly on architecture and history or include leisure activities by the water and along the cycling route.
Church and Art in Dovilai
The Evangelical Lutheran church in Dovilai was built in 1862. It is a three-aisled building with a hexagonal apse and Neo-Gothic features. The three-aisle design refers to the building’s division into three naves; the apse forms its end. The construction date and design offer different points of reference for understanding the church: the date points to its building history, while the floor plan and Neo-Gothic features describe its architectural form.
The sculpture hill “Wheel of the Passage of Time in Dovilai” comprises twelve sculptures dedicated to the twelve months. The monthly theme puts the cycle of the year at the heart of the artwork. The Klaipėda District Ethnocultural Center is also located in the center of Dovilai, in one of the few surviving old buildings. Guided tours and exhibitions are offered there. As the program and availability may change, check for current dates in advance.
Castle Hill and the History of Defense
Dovilai Castle Hill is hidden in a forest on the right bank of the Minija. From Dovilai, follow the road signs to reach it. Check local information before setting out, as signage and paths may change. The summit area is long and narrow, measuring 110 × 20 to 25 meters. Its steep slopes are about nine meters high. These dimensions describe a narrow ridge whose summit is considerably longer than it is wide.
At the end of 1944, the hillfort was incorporated into the defense system of Klaipėda. A trench was dug along the eastern edge of the summit area; an anti-tank ditch with an embankment extends to the lower slopes. These terrain features add a historical perspective to the site’s location. They also differ from the elongated shape and dimensions that define the castle hill’s physical form.
Lake and Waterside Recreation
Dovilai Lake is located on the site of a former gravel pit. On its southern shore, there is a sandy beach suitable for swimming, and beach volleyball is also available there. If you plan to swim, check the water conditions and safety measures on site. Swimming and beach volleyball are two different ways to enjoy the same lakeshore.
Dovilų karjerai is a recreation area for all seasons. It has a pontoon pier and a play and exercise area for children. The facilities’ availability may change; check local conditions before your visit. Dovilų karjerai is also used for swimming. A nearby pine forest offers the opportunity to go for a walk. Before swimming, check the water conditions and local safety measures.
Cycling Route and Landscape
The “Pavyk pajūrio vėją” tourist cycling route passes through Dovilai and can be followed as far as Liepāja. Signage and surface conditions may change, so check local information before setting out. In autumn 2017, 100 oak saplings were planted in Dovilai.
