Kaunas County in Lithuania offers a variety of reasons to travel: medieval history, Renaissance architecture, an interactive audio tour and trails through protected landscapes. If you are looking for a hotel in Kaunas County, choosing your main focus can help with planning your trip. Start by deciding whether you would like to focus on castle and museum history or on nature trails with specific routes.

Castles and Exhibitions

Kaunas Castle is the city’s oldest historical landmark and one of Lithuania’s oldest brick castles; it was built in the mid-14th century. In the restored and reconstructed tower, exhibitions tell the castle’s story through key historical facts and figures, changes to its walls, and the evolution of its functions from the 14th century to the present day. Guided tours and educational programmes are offered at the castle.

Raudondvaris Manor Castle in Kaunas County is a Renaissance architectural monument dating from the early 17th century. Its interactive audio tour, Dramaturas, was created using artificial intelligence and explores the history of the manor as well as the romantic tragedy of Žygimantas Augustas and Barbora Radvilaitė. The tour passes through halls, cellars and the park, as well as the surrounding manor complex, with 14 stops along the way. Check the seasonal availability of the audio tour before your visit.

Another cultural activity is offered at the Antanas and Jonas Juškas Museum of Ethnic Culture, where visitors can take part in an educational activity on traditional cord braiding. Visitors learn the braiding technique and how to coordinate colours. This brings a specific traditional craft into focus alongside the historical themes.

Nature and Trails

Obelynė Park is a botanical park founded by naturalist Tadas Ivanauskas in Akademija, Kaunas County. Another landscape highlight is Kadagių Valley: the five-hectare slope above the Kaunas Lagoon is covered with wild-growing common juniper and is part of Kaunas Lagoon Regional Park. A 1.3 km educational hiking trail was established in 2010 along the upper part of the steep slope. It offers panoramas of the widened Nemunas, Dabinta Island and striking geological outcrops.

Kaunas County has educational and health trails ranging from 2 to 17 km in length. A 1.9 km educational trail passes through the most interesting areas of the Dubrava Reserve; eight information boards cover features of the local flora and fauna. The Šaltinių Trail opened on 8 September 2026 and consists of routes 2.6 to 6 km long through the pine forest of Kačerginė. Viewpoints offer views of the Nemunas; the trails lead to Pypliai Hillfort and back. The routes therefore differ both in their stated lengths and in their themes: a juniper-covered slope and panoramas, forest and viewpoints, or information about local nature.
