Vendzavas brings together three distinct themes for a stay: Vendzavas dzirnavezers, an artificially created body of water; the Vendzavu Linden, a nature tourism destination; and the historic Vendzavas Manor. This gives you the option to distinguish between water and nature themes and cultural history when planning your trip.

Water, Fishing and Nature

Vendzavas dzirnavezers is an artificial body of water created on the Ķuļupīte in Ziru parish, Ventspils Municipality. It is one of the largest bodies of water in Ziru parish. Fishing is possible there. Before your trip, check whether fishing is available at your preferred time.

The Vendzavu Linden is also one of the nature tourism destinations in Ziru parish. The linden and the body of water represent different nature themes: an artificially created body of water with fishing opportunities, and a nature tourism destination. This lets you decide while planning your trip whether water and fishing or another nature theme better suits your interests.

Accommodation and boat rentals are associated with the Vendzavas campsite. Before your trip, ask directly whether these services are currently available.

Vendzavas Manor and Archaeological History

The historic Vendzavas Manor, also known as Wensau, was located in the area of today’s Ziru parish and is one of the parish’s cultural tourism destinations. If you come across the name Wensau, it also refers to Vendzavas Manor. The recreation base of the Ventspils Fish Combine, “Vendzava,” is also associated with Vendzavas Manor.

A farm building has been preserved at the manor, comprising a stable and a drying shed. A drying shed is a building used for drying. Together with the stable, it gives a tangible picture of the agricultural aspect of the surviving farm architecture. For a historical perspective, not only the manor itself but also its surviving building parts are relevant. The stable and drying shed served different purposes: a stable was used to keep animals, while a drying shed was used for drying. These two parts help identify the function of the preserved building.

Vendzavas is also among the settlement sites archaeologically investigated in western Latvia and the coastal area of Courland. An unnatural body position was observed in a Vendzavas burial; a change in position was proposed as a possible explanation.

The archaeological findings offer a different perspective from the description of the manor: one concerns an investigated settlement site and a burial finding, while the other concerns a preserved farm building. This makes it possible to consider cultural history and archaeological research as distinct themes when planning your trip.
