Discover Saldus: Culture, Trails and Seasonal Activities
Accommodation in Saldus
Saldus offers several distinct highlights to consider when planning a stay: art and local history, trails through the landscape, and seasonal leisure activities. Depending on your interests, you can focus on cultural sites, walks, cycling, or an insight into local food production. The places and activities below give you concrete starting points for making your selection.
Art and Culture in Saldus
The J. RozentÄls Saldus History and Art Museum displays original works from the early period of the Latvian master painterās career. It is currently the only place in Latvia where these originals can be viewed. If you are interested in art, a visit to this museum offers a particular focus on the painterās early work.
The Saldus Music and Art School building has an acoustically designed concert hall used for cultural events. It also regularly hosts exhibitions by students, teachers and guest artists. In this building, concerts and exhibitions featuring work by different contributors take place side by side.
Saldus St. Johnās Evangelical Lutheran Church is the oldest building in the town. Seven life-size bronze sculptures stand on the steps beside the church. They depict figures from J. RozentÄlsās painting āAfter the Service.ā This means you can encounter a connection to the painterās work not only in the museum, but also as art in the urban landscape.
The āMedus piliensā fountain is located in MÄra ÄaklÄ Square. Its design consists of two horizontal honeycombs connected by a large drop of honey. The honeycombs and the drop give the fountain a clearly recognizable motif, adding a public-space design to Saldusās varied connections to art.
The Lake, Walking Trails and Cycling
Lake Saldus covers 11.9 hectares. It lies near the town center in a valley between several hills. Both its location close to town and the landscape shape help orient visitors here: the lake sits in a valley surrounded by hills.
The Ciecere nature and walking trail runs along the Ciecere River, from the bridge on Kuldīgas Street to the bridge on Saules Street. The two bridges mark the endpoints of the trail. As trail conditions can change, check the latest information before your walk.
KalnsÄtas Park has narrow, steep paths along the Ciecere River, as well as wider paths for more leisurely walks. These differences can help you tailor your plans to the type of path: narrow, steep sections contrast with wider paths for more leisurely walks. The description therefore identifies different path profiles, without suggesting that the entire park has a uniform surface.
The āAtklÄj un iepazÄ«sti Saldus pilsÄtuā cycling route is intended for exploring by bike. Check the latest route details before setting out, as they can change. This keeps the choice between a walk and a cycling route focused on two different activities, rather than treating them as the same way of exploring.
Local Tastings and Seasonal Activities
At the Saldus Food Factory, visitors can join a tour of the confectionery production department by arrangement and sample fresh āGotiÅaā milk candies. The experience combines an insight into confectionery production with a tasting; arranging the visit is part of planning the tour.
The āSaldalusā brewery also offers visitors a tour with a beer tasting. Bear advance booking in mind when planning. Both experiences introduce visitors to local food production, but differ in the production process being visited and the tasting offered.
During the summer season, there is an 18-hole mini golf course near the Saldus Sports Complex. Children can also enjoy an inflatable attraction, a trampoline and pedal go-karts. These activities are seasonal and may vary outside the summer period. If you want to plan your trip around them, check what is available for your intended visit dates.
