Discover Līvāni: Glass History and Craftsmanship
Accommodation in Līvāni
Glass in Līvāni is part of the town’s history, collections, and craftsmanship: the Glass Museum presents the history of the glass factory, the glassblowing workshop adds a look at the manufacturing process, and two workshops let you create your own designs. This profile is complemented by weaving traditions, art exhibitions, a swimming pool, and a ferry across the Daugava. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, these different themes can provide a concrete starting point for planning your trip.
Glass History and Production
The Līvāni Glass Museum is the only museum of its kind in the Baltics. It presents the history of the Līvāni glass factory from 1887 and displays several thousand glass products made at the factory. The museum combines a historical perspective on the factory with examples of its output.
At the glassblowing workshop, visitors can watch hot glass products being made. Unlike the collection, the focus here is not on the finished product but on the manufacturing process. Check the workshop’s current visiting arrangements before you travel.
Create Your Own Glass Designs
If you would like to try your hand at creating something, there are two workshops with different focuses. “Touch the Glass” lets participants make their own glass design object. The Tiffany glass workshop helps them make their own stained-glass window using the Tiffany technique. The workshops therefore differ in both outcome and technique: a glass design object in one, a stained-glass window made using the Tiffany technique in the other. Advance arrangements are required for both workshops, so please make them before taking part. Together, these offer three different ways to explore the subject of glass: learning about its history and products at the museum, watching the manufacturing process, and creating your own design in a workshop.
Culture and Craftsmanship
The Līvāni Liberation Monument was restored and reopened on 2 December 2004. The Old Believer community in Līvāni has existed since the beginning of the 20th century. These offer two distinct historical points of reference: a precisely dated event at the monument and the continuity of a community over time.
The “Dubna” Applied Folk Art Studio preserves and develops old weaving traditions. The community’s history and the art of weaving offer different cultural perspectives: one points to a community, the other to the preservation and development of a craft tradition. Free art exhibitions open to everyone are held in the exhibition house. Advance registration is required, so be sure to include it in your visit plans.
Swimming Pool and Ferry
The “Upe” swimming pool in Līvāni has a sports pool, a children’s pool, and a spa area. This different kind of leisure activity complements the town’s cultural and craft offerings.
At the end of Zemgale Street near Līvāni, a ferry connects the two banks of the Daugava. It offers the most direct connection from Latgale to Sēlija and Zemgale. Seasonal or operating conditions may vary, so check the timetable if you plan to take the ferry during your trip.
