Vilce offers two distinct focal points for planning a trip: the architectural and local history of Vilces muiža, and the river landscape and trails in Vilces dabas parks. The manor house, castle mound and routes offer different perspectives on the region. If you are looking for a hotel in Vilce, these themes can help you decide whether architectural history, walks or nature observation is most important for your stay.

Manor house and local history

The manor house at Vilces muiža is an architectural monument of national importance and forms part of the Vilces muižas apbūve architectural monument, registered under state protection number 5280. It was built in the third quarter of the 18th century. The coat of arms of the Medem and Keyserling family alliance is displayed on the Baroque stone portal. The construction period, monument status and portal each offer a different point of reference for exploring the history of the manor house.

Vilces muiža also houses an exhibition on the history of the parish. It complements the building itself with a connection to local history. Since 2019, work to uncover historic wall and ceiling paintings has been carried out in room 14 of the manor house. Thus, both the architecture and the documented work to uncover the interior paintings are among Vilce’s cultural highlights.

Castle mound and river landscape

In Vilces dabas parks, the rivers Vilce and Rukūze meet as they flow through ravines. The deeply incised terrain contrasts with the region’s flat, agricultural landscape. The 12-metre-high Vilces pilskalns is located at the confluence. This castle mound was inhabited by the Semigallians during the middle and late Iron Age. From the summit, you can look out over the valleys and the sandstone outcrops along the Rukūze.

The sandstone outcrops near Zaķu pļava also give the river landscape a distinctive natural feature: Devonian outcrops known as Nāriņu klints can be seen along the banks of the Vilce and Rukūze. The small Mīlestības kalniņš viewing platform is also located in Vilces Nature Park. The castle mound, river valleys, sandstone and platform offer different points of reference for taking in the landscape.

Trails and outdoor activities

A walking trail leads from Vilces muiža to Vilces pilskalns. This connection makes the castle mound a destination with a direct link to the manor house; from the summit, the view stretches across the valleys and the sandstone outcrops along the Rukūze. The Barona taka, established as part of Natura 2000, is suitable for informative walks, hiking, running, nature observation and outdoor recreation. The activities listed therefore include both exercise and nature observation.

Another option is the riverside route along the Vilce between Vilces ūdensdzirnavas and the Swedish Monument. It is of moderate difficulty and approximately 8 kilometres long. Unlike the wider range of activities on Barona taka, this route has a specific distance and difficulty level. This lets you distinguish between the different trail options depending on whether you would prefer several kinds of activity or a route with a stated length.

A 12-basket disc golf course also extends across the landscape park at Vilces muiža, where disc golf tournaments can be held. Discs for the course can be borrowed by prior arrangement from the Vilce Tourism Information Point, located at Vilces muiža. If disc golf is part of your travel plans, arranging to borrow equipment is part of the process. This activity in the landscape park complements the trails through the natural and river landscapes, as well as the area’s historical themes.
