Zebras Muiža: Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Zebras Muiža
Lakes, Springs and Bogs
When planning a trip to Zebras Muiža, different interests may influence your choice: lakes and spring areas, wooded hills or archaeological sites. The “Zebrus un Svētes ezers” nature reserve is characterised by eutrophic, or nutrient-rich, lakes, swampy forests, mineral-rich springs and spring-fed bogs. At Zebrus avoti, springs, spring-fed bogs and the glacially formed slope of the Zebrus ezers depression are connected. Visible spring outlets shape this scenic area. Those interested in nature will find several different landscape features here, rather than just a single lake view.
Hills and Access
The Ezerlūķu pilskalns, about 30 metres high, lies on the eastern shore of Zebrus ezers. It is also a stop on the “Pa seno zemgaļu takām” route. The Zebrenes Elku kalns is a separate site: it rises between Svētes ezers and Zebrus ezers, around 20 metres above the surrounding swampy area. Traditionally, it is regarded as a place where ancestral gods were worshipped and offerings made. The two height figures describe different things: for Elku kalns, the figure refers to its height above the swampy surroundings, not its elevation above sea level.
The route is important for access to Zebrenes Elku kalns: the hill cannot be reached by car. The walking route follows the swampy shore of Svētes ezers for more than a kilometre. Take this into account before adding the site to your plans.
Walking Trails and Views
Steep hills, deep valleys and scenic landscapes define the character of LVM Pokaiņu mežs. There are 15 kilometres of walking trails there, with themed options. A different distance applies to the “Apkārt Zebrus ezeram” route: it can be extended by about 14 kilometres to Pokaiņu mežs. The figures refer to different things—the length of walking trails in the forest and a possible route extension. They are therefore not directly comparable as distances for a single trip.
Krievkalni is a wooded ridge. Its highest summit reaches 149 metres above sea level and offers a wide view over the forests of Zemgale. At the summit there is an LVM rest area with tables, benches, a fire pit and an observation platform. If you are choosing a place to stay based on its landscapes, the features described differ: at Pokaiņu mežs, the focus is on walking trails and themed options; at Krievkalni, it is on the ridge, its views and the rest area.
Cultural Sites and Activities
The Avotiņu senkapi burial site near Avotiņi (Zebras muiža) is a locally significant archaeological monument dating from the Middle Iron Age. The archaeological site comprises a burial ground and a settlement. The dating gives interested visitors a specific historical period, while the two components provide more detail about the character of the site. Ezerlūķu pilskalns is also part of the “Pa seno zemgaļu takām” route.
Boat trips are offered at the “Vipēdis” recreation area by prior arrangement. Fishing is also possible there with the appropriate permit and by prior arrangement. Make the necessary arrangements and obtain the required permit before planning these activities.
