Rāmuļi: School History and Windmill Heritage
Accommodation in Rāmuļi
With a school history dating back to 1864, Rāmuļi offers a tangible way to explore the area’s past. Its musical tradition and windmill history add to this picture. If you are interested in regional culture, you can explore the development of Rāmuļu pamatskola, the work of choir director Antons Veidens and the windmills’ technical feature. A commemorative event and a campsite add further, clearly distinct topics to your travel plans.
The history of Rāmuļu pamatskola
The history of Rāmuļu pamatskola dates back to 1864. In 1872, the school and parish house were built together on the land of Vanadziņi. The school was inaugurated on 6 December 1873. Antons Veidens led Rāmuļi School from 1873 to 1893; these dates therefore link the early history of the school with his long tenure.
The historic school building was made of wood and included two classrooms, a dining room, two sleeping rooms, a kitchen and three rooms for teachers. This layout included communal and residential spaces as well as classrooms. In the 1930s, a second storey was added to the building. In 1958, a new school building was constructed; a boarding school was established in the older building. This makes it possible to distinguish several construction and functional stages without combining them into a single building phase.
Musical tradition and commemorative event
Antons Veidens is also part of the local musical history beyond his work as a school head: he founded and led a choir in Rāmuļi. Dziesmu diena Rāmuļos adds another musical highlight. It is a commemorative event for conductor Daumants Gailis and takes place every five years. If you are planning to travel specifically for this event, check the dates of the relevant edition in advance.
The Rāmuļi windmills: operation and technology
The Rāmuļi windmills ceased operating in 1927. One specific technical feature concerns the mechanism for turning the mill cap: all the gears were made of wood, not iron. The year marks the end of operations; the information about the gears, by contrast, describes a detail of the mechanism. The windmills’ operating history and mechanism illustrate two distinct aspects of the Rāmuļi windmills.
Getting around and camping
