For a trip to Cēsis, you can choose from a wide range of themes: Latvian history, art, space exploration, creative pottery activities or nature trails. The themes differ in what you can experience on site: historical context, exhibitions, hands-on activities or routes with specific distances. If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay, this selection can help you first decide which themes interest you most.

History, exhibitions and medieval experiences

A town grew up around Cēsis Medieval Castle in the 13th century. The castle is considered Latvia’s most impressive and best-preserved castle ruins. In summer, visitors can try out various medieval games and activities with the castle residents in the castle garden on weekends. This offers two distinct ways to engage with the site: the castle’s historical significance and a seasonal hands-on activity. As the programme takes place on summer weekends, it’s worth checking the dates before your trip.

The Cēsu muzejs was founded in 1925. An exhibition explains the special significance of Cēsis in Latvian history. This provides a clear connection to Latvian history alongside the town’s medieval origins around the castle. The Cēsu izstāžu nams hosts exhibitions in various art forms. Those who want to focus on art rather than a single historical theme will find a different cultural focus here.

Space exploration and creative activities

The Kosmosa izziņas centrs features an interactive exhibition spread across three floors. Its topics include space exploration, astronauts’ lives and technologies used beyond Earth. This brings together three different perspectives: scientific exploration, human experience and technological applications. If you’re interested in space, the exhibition offers more than a general overview of the cosmos.

DŪDA KERAMIKA offers pottery workshops for adults and children. The focus here is on hands-on work with clay, rather than viewing an exhibition. Maija Park in Cēsis adds other outdoor activities to the selection: it has a spacious children’s area with play equipment for different age groups, a bicycle park and a skatepark. These facilities appeal to different interests and can therefore each be considered a focus in their own right.

Forest trails along the Gauja

The Cīrulīšu Nature Trails offer three well-maintained, easily accessible routes measuring 2.7 km, 3.5 km and 6.2 km. They follow forest trails along the Gauja. The 2.7 km route is the shortest, the 6.2 km route the longest, and the 3.5 km route lies between them. This lets you start by choosing according to the stated distance, while all three routes share the described character of forest trails along the river. As trail conditions can change, it’s best to check them before your visit.

Whether you’re more interested in history, art, space, pottery workshops, park activities or a trail along the Gauja, planning your trip can start with a specific focus. You can then choose where to stay in Cēsis based on the themes that really matter to your trip.
