Mežotne combines cultural history with the landscape along the Lielupe. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Mežotne, you can tailor your choice to your main interests: palace architecture, archaeological history, cultural themes or a route through the area. Mežotne Palace, the hillfort and the church offer different perspectives. Historical sites and seasonal conditions can both play a role.

Palace and Park

Mežotne Palace is a Neoclassical landmark on the banks of the Lielupe and a structural unit of Rundāle Palace Museum. Beside the palace is a 10-hectare park, whose design began at the same time as the palace was built. The area refers to the park, while the simultaneous start places its design within the history of the palace’s construction.

Hillfort and Ancient City

The Mežotne hillfort lies on the left bank of the Lielupe, opposite Mežotne Palace. An ancient city once extended across 13 hectares between the hillfort and Vīnakalns; it was the largest in historic Zemgale. The archaeological complex comprises the ancient city, Vīnakalns Hill, two burial grounds and a harbour site. The 13 hectares refer to the former city, not to the combined area of all the complex’s components.

Church, Cultural Space and View

The “Mežotne Church” cultural space presents the history, everyday life, customs and figures associated with the Mežotne hillfort. The exhibition in Mežotne Church features reconstructions of ancient Semigallian clothing and jewellery. The cultural space therefore covers a broader range of themes, while the reconstructions focus on specific items of clothing and jewellery. The church’s tower gallery is 27 metres high and offers a view of the Zemgale plain and the gently flowing Lielupe. The exhibition and the tower gallery thus have different focuses: one on clothing and jewellery, the other on the landscape.

Concert Season, Route and Time of Year

The building of the Small Mežotne Palace complex is a masterpiece of 19th-century Neoclassicism. During the palace’s concert seasons, the concert hall welcomes lovers of classical music. If a concert is the reason for your trip, plan your dates around the concert season and check the specific concert dates. The Semigallian section of the Balts’ Road route passes through Mežotne. The route offers a different way of exploring Mežotne than visiting a single site: it passes through the area, while the palace and hillfort provide specific cultural and historical points of reference. The pontoon bridge over the Lielupe near Mežotne Palace is dismantled in winter. If you plan to use this bridge, take its seasonal dismantling into account. Two different seasonal considerations are important when choosing your travel dates: the palace’s concert seasons and the bridge’s winter dismantling.
