Prosperous: Local History and Nature
Prosperous combines visible traces of its industrial history with a rich architectural heritage. In the town itself, the former textile factory and distinctive historic buildings shape the landscape; nearby woods, a lake and leisure activities offer further attractions. If you’re looking for a hotel in Prosperous, you can decide whether local history or destinations in the surrounding countryside will play a greater part in your stay.
Industrial History in the Town
The former Prosperous Textile Factory is a long, low building of considerable social and historical significance. Historically, it formed the core of the town of Prosperous and encouraged its commercialisation and growth in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Remains of former hat, cotton and linen factories are also still visible in Prosperous. In the late 18th century, Sir Robert Brooke attempted to establish cotton production in Prosperous. Several sites and historical references therefore point to the local textile history.
Architecture and Local History
The Catholic Church of Our Lady and Saint Joseph is a well-preserved church in a restrained Gothic Revival style and is considered the most distinctive building in Prosperous. It is dated to 1869. Its architecture includes a four-bay, double-height nave, single-storey aisles and a lower, double-height chancel. Old Main Street in Prosperous is also designated as an Architectural Conservation Area.
Ruins of a house occupied by a British garrison during the Rebellion of 1798 can also be seen in Prosperous. This site adds a specific connection to the history of the late 18th century to the town’s architectural heritage.
Traditions at St. Farnan’s Well
St. Farnan’s Well is next to the old cemetery in Downings, near Prosperous. One local tradition tells that its water turned into whey when boiled. Another calls it the Well of Sobriety and says that those who drank from it later lost their taste for intoxicating drinks. Both stories are part of the local traditions surrounding the well.
