Foxrock: Beckett History, Golf and Horse Racing
Accommodation in Foxrock
Foxrock is a leafy suburb in the south of County Dublin, between the sea at DĂşn Laoghaire and the foothills of the Dublin Mountains. Its landmarks are at the heart of the area, while golf and horse racing offer further specific reasons to plan a trip. This lets you assess Foxrock as a destination based on your interests before choosing a hotel.
Local history at the centre
At the centre of Foxrock, Beckett Green is home to the Foxrock area Heritage Map. It shows local attractions and offers a practical starting point for finding your way around the area. There is also a photographic exhibition about the Harcourt Street Railway Line in the Foxrock Village car park, on the site of the former Foxrock railway station. The map and exhibition cover different aspects of the area: one draws attention to local attractions, while the other focuses on the railway line and former station. Together, they offer an insight into Foxrock’s local landmarks and history.
The K1-Mk-234 telephone box stands in the centre of Foxrock Village. Built in 1926, it is considered the oldest in the country and is a protected structure in South County Dublin’s early 20th-century architectural heritage. Samuel Barclay Beckett is also biographically connected to Foxrock: he was born on Good Friday, 13 April 1906, the second child of Bill and May Beckett (née Roe), at the family home on the corner of Kerrymount Avenue and Brighton Road. The telephone box and Beckett’s birthplace represent two different aspects of the area’s history: its built heritage and its connection to Beckett.
Planning for golf and horse racing
Leopardstown Golf Centre is in the heart of Foxrock Village. For visitors, tee times are generally available there from 2 pm Sunday to Friday and from 3 pm on Saturdays. The time slots vary by day of the week, starting later on Saturdays. Check the latest information before you travel if you plan to play a round. This makes it possible to plan a golf visit around the stated days and times. Leopardstown Racecourse offers a different kind of sporting activity: flat racing, as well as hurdle and steeplechase racing, takes place there throughout the year.
As a venue, Leopardstown Racecourse is also associated with several named events: the opening day of Irish Champions Weekend, the Leopardstown Christmas Festival, the BHP Insurance Irish Champion Hurdle and the Unibet Irish Gold Cup. Event names and programmes may change, so check the latest information on dates before your trip. For one of the named events, your plans will depend on the specific date, while the race formats take place throughout the year.
