Discover Dublin: Culture, History and Hotels
Accommodation in Dublin
Dublin combines important collections and historic sites with striking landscapes. If you’re looking for a hotel in Dublin, you can plan your stay around the topics that interest you most: the National Museum of Ireland on Kildare Street is in the heart of the city centre; Dublin Castle and Trinity College add their own periods and collections to the city’s history. Phoenix Park and North Bull Island offer a different perspective.
Museums and Historic Sites
The National Museum of Ireland houses important treasures such as the Ardagh Chalice, the Tara Brooch and the Derrynaflan Hoard. Its year-round programme includes workshops, talks and tours for all age groups. Individual offerings may change; check which formats are currently available before your visit.
The history of Dublin Castle dates back to the Viking Age, and the building was constructed in the 13th century. It served as a military fortress, prison, treasury and courthouse. These different functions give you several historical aspects to consider when exploring the site’s history.
Trinity College and Kilmainham Gaol
Trinity College Dublin was founded in 1592. The Book of Kells is housed in the Old Library Building. The Book of Kells Experience showcases the precious ninth-century manuscript, which contains the four Gospels of the New Testament. The Experience also includes a digital exhibition in the Pavilion next to the Old Library. The Long Room houses 250,000 of Ireland’s oldest books and historical documents. This places the manuscript, digital exhibition and extensive collection alongside one another as distinct highlights.
A 45-minute trail starts at the Bell Tower and leads to hidden spots around Trinity College. Kilmainham Gaol also offers a set timeframe for part of your visit: it includes a one-hour guided tour and an exhibition. The trail is listed as taking 45 minutes, while the tour at Kilmainham lasts one hour; you can compare these durations when planning. Tour arrangements may change, so check the latest information in advance.
Parks and Nature
Phoenix Park is one of the largest walled public parks in a European capital. North Bull Island is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in Dublin. These offer two distinct landscape options: a walled public park and a biosphere reserve. If you’d like to focus on landscapes as well as museums and architectural history during your stay, you can include these as separate highlights in your plans.
