Kastoria on Lake Orestiada
Accommodation in Kastoria
Kastoria combines a distinctive lakeside setting with caves, historic mansions and museums. The city is built amphitheatrically on a piece of land surrounded by Lake Orestiada. This offers several focuses for planning your trip: the landscape by the water, the city's architectural history and its cultural attractions.
The Lake, Lakeside Path and Dragon's Cave
Lake Kastoria has been classified by the Greek Ministry of Culture as a natural monument of particular beauty and included in the European Natura 2000 environmental protection network. This classification adds a clear conservation dimension to the landscape.
The short circular path around the lake passes plane trees, old mansions and churches. Along the way, there are views of the calm surface of Lake Orestiada. The walk brings together views of nature and the city.
On a relaxing excursion aboard the boat “ΟΛΥΜΠΙΑ,” the route goes around the Kastoria peninsula. Along the way, views open up of Dragon's Cave, the Monastery of Panagia Mavriotissa and the city's mansions. If you plan a trip, check in advance whether it is operating and when.
Dragon's Cave also combines natural features with a specific route: the visitor trail is 300 metres long and passes through ten halls and by seven small freshwater lakes. The cave's features include stalactites, stalagmites and palaeontological finds, including cave bear bones that are approximately 10,000 years old.
Mansions and Museums in Kastoria
Several museums are housed in historic buildings or focus on collections with a direct connection to the city and its history. The Kastoria Folklore Museum is located in the Nerantzi Aivazi mansion in the traditional Doltso quarter. It offers an insight into the life of an aristocratic family from Kastoria.
In the Emmanuel Brothers mansion, also in the Doltso quarter, the Costume Museum displays authentic costumes from all over Greece. These include elaborately crafted costumes from Kastoria. The collection thus combines a national perspective on clothing with a particular connection to local dress.
The Museum of the Macedonian Struggle displays heirlooms belonging to descendants of Macedonian fighters, uniforms and photographs from both the early and peak periods of the Macedonian Struggle. One of the historical maps is dated to 1550. This collection has a different focus from the folklore and costume collections: it centres on historical documents and maps.
The mansions themselves also offer different insights into architectural history. The traditional Papaterpou mansion is on the lakeside road, on Megalou Alexandrou Street, and is dated to 1880. The Tsatsiapa mansion in the Apozari quarter was built in 1754. It is the city's only surviving three-storey mansion with a rectangular floor plan and a pronounced horizontal axis. Alongside its construction date, the building's form and proportions are therefore part of its architectural profile.
The Kourshoum Mosque is the only one of Kastoria's seven Ottoman mosques that has survived to this day. Experts believe it was built at the beginning of the 15th century on the foundations of an older Byzantine church. Its construction on these foundations is therefore considered a possibility, not a confirmed dating.
A Tradition Observed on Set Days in January
The Kastorian Ragoutsaria tradition takes place in Kastoria every year on 6, 7 and 8 January. If the traditional festival is an important reason for your trip, these three days provide a clear timeframe. Its recurrence on set dates in January distinguishes the tradition from the year-round features of the landscape and architecture.
A Trip to the Open-Air Museum of Dispilio
The Open-Air Museum of Dispilio is located near the city on the southern shore of Lake Kastoria, about 7 kilometres from Kastoria. It reconstructs a Neolithic lakeside village as it might have looked around 7,500 years ago. The cautious wording is important: the site offers a possible picture of the village at that time, not certainty about every detail of its appearance. Dispilio complements Kastoria's museums and historic buildings with an archaeological perspective on life by the lake in prehistoric times.
