Foloi is a mountain village with picturesque houses. When planning your trip, you can consider the village, exhibition and oak landscape as distinct points of interest. The permanent exhibition and a small environmental information center are located in the Foloi Museum; the Kapelis Oak Forest and the Environmental Museum extend the subject to the wider landscape. The routes described also differ in their destinations, lengths and planning status.

Village and Oak Landscape

In the wider travel area, Greece’s only flat oak forest lies on the Foloi Plateau. It is also known as Kapelis. In the wider travel area, the Environmental Museum in the Foloi Oak Forest provides information about the forest’s natural and cultural environment and its wider surroundings. This presents the landscape itself and its natural and cultural environment as two perspectives. In the immediate destination area, visiting the Environmental Museum and the Foloi Oak Forest Information Center requires a prior arrangement with the Municipality of Ancient Olympia; confirm the arrangement before your visit.

The oak forest is associated with the Foloi Plateau, while the museum and exhibition center is located in the village’s primary school. The landscape and the exhibition therefore have different focuses: one concerns the forest and its wider surroundings, the other the photographic documentation in the village museum. This distinction is useful if you want to keep nature-related topics separate from local history when planning your trip.

Exhibition and Environmental Information

The Foloi Museum and Exhibition Center, located in the primary school, houses the permanent exhibition “The Foloi Oak Forest and Its People 1920–2007.” Photographs document the lives of Foloi’s residents from 1920 to 2007. The same museum also houses a small environmental information center, founded in 2009 by the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature.

The years refer to different things: 1920 to 2007 is the period of the residents’ lives documented in the exhibition, while 2009 is the year the environmental information center was founded. The exhibition focuses on the residents’ life stories; the environmental information center offers a different focus. At the museum, you can therefore find both photographic documentation and environmental information, although the two cover different subjects.

Hiking Trails and Regional Route

The 22,167-meter hiking trail from Foloi, via the Church of the Resurrection of the Savior, to Lasdikas begins within the settlement. Check local conditions before setting out. The starting point, destination and total length give you specific information to help assess this route.

The 14,094-meter route from the Foloi Environmental Museum to the settlement of Lampeia is different: it is described as a planned route. Its length and endpoints are given, but its planning status sets it apart from the hiking trail to Lasdikas. Keep this distinction in mind when comparing the two routes; their length alone does not describe the status of each.

In the wider travel area, the official route “In the footsteps of Centaurs” lists the Foloi Oak Forest, the village of Foloi and the Environmental Museum - Foloi Oak Forest Information Center as stops. This list of stops offers a different kind of orientation from the individual route descriptions: it names places as stops, whereas the route information gives specific lengths, starting points and destinations. This allows you to distinguish the regional list of stops from the two hiking routes, which are described differently.
