Pýli: Bridges, Trails and History
Accommodation in Pýli
The Portaikos flows through Pýli. Six bridges close together along the river make up the village’s bridge park. There are also hiking trails to named destinations, a climbing area, buildings with their own history and an opportunity to taste wine. If you’re looking for a hotel in Pýli, these different themes can help you plan your trip around specific interests: bridge construction, hiking, climbing, or a focus on history and food and drink.
Bridges on the Portaikos
Six bridges close together on the Portaikos near Pýli date from different periods between 1514 and 2014 and differ in their construction. Together, they make up Pýli’s bridge park. The five-century span brings the ensemble’s historical depth to life; at the same time, the bridges’ differing construction invites visitors to distinguish them not only by age but also by design.
A 120-meter-long and 2-meter-wide pedestrian bridge leads to the site of Pýli’s former settlement. Its dimensions give a tangible sense of the crossing; its destination adds a connection to the village’s earlier settlement history.
The Bridge of Saint Vissarion is also near Pýli. It has a single arch with a semicircular opening. The bridge is 30 meters high and has a span of 29 meters; among the traditional bridges of Thessaly, its span is the second largest. Its shape and dimensions give this structure a distinctive profile within the region’s bridge landscape.
Hiking trails and climbing
Two hiking trails start from Platanos Square and lead to different destinations: one to the ancient Athenaion Fort, the other to Profitis Ilias on Itamos. Another trail to Athenaion Fort starts opposite Pýli’s arched bridge. The routes therefore differ both in destination and starting point. Access to Athenaion is difficult. If you plan to visit the fort, check current accessibility and trail conditions before setting out.
A climbing area established in 1996 is located on the Koziakas side of Pýli’s arched bridge. It has 15 routes, graded from 7c− to 8a+. The number of routes and grades may change, so check current information before including the area in your plans. This lets you consider this climbing spot separately from the hiking destinations and take your own interests into account when planning your trip.
Local history and wine
Pýli was formerly called Porta Pazar. The Church of Porta Panagia is near Pýli; it was built in 1283 as the katholikon of the stavropegial Monastery of the Great Gates. The construction date places the church in the 13th century; its connection to the monastery adds historical context to the date. The former name of the village and the church’s construction history offer two different points of connection to the past, complementing the bridges as another way to explore the history of the area.
At Κελάρι Περγαντή in Pýli, guests can taste traditional wines. Confirm current visiting arrangements before your visit.
