Discover Thessaly
Accommodation in Thessaly
Thessaly can be explored through a range of very different highlights: towering sandstone pillars, a man-made lake landscape, museums and local food culture. When planning your trip, it helps to weigh landscape, activities and culture according to your own interests.
Rock Formations and Nature
In the UNESCO Global Geopark Meteora-Pyli in Thessaly, Meteora’s sandstone pillars rise to heights of up to 300 metres. Well-marked hiking trails in Meteora lead to monasteries, hermitages and old paved paths. Here, a striking rock landscape meets trails leading to special destinations—a highlight for travellers who want to experience nature and culture together.
Lake Plastiras offers a different kind of landscape: water, dense vegetation, picturesque villages and the surrounding wild mountains are all part of this man-made landscape. Near Neohori, a botanical garden presents the flora of Greece across ten hectares. While the lake brings together various landscape features, the garden is clearly focused on plants.
Trails, Activities and Getting There
The Pelion Ski Centre offers five slopes ranging from easy to difficult, as well as a cross-country ski trail and a snow park. Travellers weighing up different activities for their trip will find an option here with a distinct focus, alongside Meteora’s hiking trails. The slopes and facilities mentioned differ considerably in type and level of difficulty.
KTEL intercity buses connect Thessaly with Athens and Thessaloniki via Volos. In Volos, travellers can change to regional buses to the villages of Pelion. If you include these connections in your plans, check the current timetables; journey times may change.
Museums and Local Food Culture
The Diachronic Museum of Larissa presents nearly 10,000 years of Thessalian life and culture across 1,500 square metres. The City Museum in Volos has a different focus: it offers historical walks based on personal memories, as well as audio walks and educational programmes that encourage visitor participation. Programmes may change over time, so check what is currently on offer before visiting.
The two museums therefore offer different perspectives for a day of culture: Larissa focuses on a broad span of Thessalian history and culture, while the City Museum of Volos makes history accessible through memories and participation. Food culture is also part of the travel experience in Volos: tsipouradika serve tsipouro, usually accompanied by seafood and vegetable dishes.
Planning Your Visits
The Theopetra Cave has reopened to the public following several years of restoration work. The reopening took place under strict conservation and safety requirements. If you are planning a visit, check the latest information about visiting conditions.
If Pelion is part of your plans, bus connections from Volos to the villages may be a relevant planning consideration. Choose your hotel location based on the places and activities you actually want to visit, and check the latest timetable for the bus journey.
