Zagora – Culture, History and Hotels
Accommodation in Zagora
When looking for a hotel in Zagora, you can get a sense of the destination through its cultural history, architecture and landscape. The Hellenic Museum, the Historical Library and Agia Kyriaki are specific historical landmarks; Zagora also offers views of the Aegean Sea. A tasting experience adds a culinary perspective to these impressions.
Museum and school history
The Hellenic Museum, also known as the School of Rigas Feraios, was founded in 1712. It serves as an exhibition space and a venue for lectures; exhibitions are also held there regularly. Copies of incunabula and manuscripts from the Historical Library are on permanent display. The museum thus combines exhibitions and lectures with the presentation of historical printed works and manuscripts. If you are planning a visit, check the current schedule of lectures and exhibitions.
Another link to the history of education dates back to 1852: the first girls’ school on Pelion was founded in Zagora and remained open until 1930. This school should not be confused with the School of Rigas Feraios, founded in 1712. The two dates therefore mark different chapters: the history of the school for which the museum is named, and the founding of the first girls’ school on Pelion. This distinction helps put the town’s historical connections into context.
The Historical Library at Agios Georgios
The Historical Library is located in the central square of Agios Georgios. Members and visitors can consult materials on site. Dictionaries, encyclopedias, periodicals, folklore materials and antiquities more than 50 years old are not available for loan. These collections can therefore be consulted on site but not borrowed. The library complements the museum in a different way: visitors can consult materials here, while copies of incunabula and manuscripts are on permanent display in the museum.
Church architecture and landscape
Agia Kyriaki also offers a specific historical point of reference. The three-aisled church was built in 1740; its gilded, carved wooden iconostasis dates from 1742. The construction date and the furnishings offer different clues to the design of the building: the three-aisled layout divides the church interior, while the iconostasis is a distinct element of the furnishings with its own date.
Zagora offers views of the Aegean Sea. This landscape complements the themes of education, the library and church architecture with another side of the town. When making your decision, you can weigh whether you would rather associate Zagora with its historical landmarks or with views of the sea.
