Achillio: Coast, Local History and Marine Museum
Accommodation in Achillio
Coastal Setting and Beach
Achillio is a coastal village stretching along a sheltered curve of beach in Pteleos Bay. Achillio’s North Beach occupies part of Achillio Bay, which is 4,800 metres long. This measurement refers to the entire bay, not just the North Beach. This distinction is useful when planning your trip: it assigns the 4,800 metres to the bay rather than reading it as the length of a single stretch of beach. Achillio Beach received the “Blue Flag” award in 2025.
Local History
Achillio grew out of the village of Hamako; settlement began around 1918. Hamako is the village’s origin, while the approximate date places the beginning of settlement in Achillio in time. Local history also includes the tradition that Hamako was named after Hamko, the mother of Ali Pasha. Hamko usually spent the summers there. This tradition adds a local story to the historical timeline and connects the former village name with a person from the region’s history. If local history is also a factor in choosing your destination, this story offers a distinct connection to the village’s origins.
Marine Museum: Nature and Sponge Diving
The Marine Museum in Achillio features marine animals such as crabs, sea urchins and corals. Through texts, drawings and photographs, visitors learn more about the biology, anatomy and ecology of marine animals. These different media complement the animal exhibits with explanatory content. Biology focuses on living organisms, anatomy on their structure, and ecology on their relationships with the environment. The exhibition can therefore be explored both through specific marine animals and through a range of natural history topics.
A separate section is devoted to sponge diving. The collection includes photographs, sponges and equipment such as the kagava and skandalopetra. This makes the subject a distinct focus alongside the marine animals. Photographs, sponges and named pieces of equipment present the section through different kinds of collection items. The Marine Museum is suitable for organised excursions and guided tours for school groups interested in environmental topics. Those interested in the exhibition’s environmental perspective can find it in the ecological approach to marine animals. Sponge diving offers a different thematic perspective: here, a maritime activity takes centre stage alongside the biology of the animals.
Planning Your Trip
Two different kinds of information can help you decide whether to visit: the coastal details locate the beach and bay, while the museum explores marine animals from a natural history perspective and presents sponge diving as a separate collection area. This distinction helps you assess geographical orientation and personal interests separately.
