Itamos: Church and Fir Trees
Accommodation in Itamos
Itamos can be experienced through two local features: a church with a clearly specified feast day and tall fir trees surrounding the settlement on all sides.
The Church and Feast Day in Itamos
In the settlement of Itamos stands a church dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Saviour. Its feast is celebrated on 6 August. The feast day gives you a specific point of reference when choosing your travel dates, if this occasion is of interest to you. If you would like to see inside the church, please check access in advance.
The Fir Trees as Part of the Local Landscape
Tall fir trees surround Itamos on all sides. They therefore shape not just one particular spot, but the surroundings of the entire settlement. Together with the church, they offer a simple comparison to help you decide on your trip: the feast day is tied to a specific date, while the fir trees define the landscape of the place. Depending on whether you would rather plan around a cultural occasion or the character of the surroundings, a different aspect will take centre stage.
Events in Karditsa
Several cultural events in Karditsa take place at different times of the year. The Panhellenic Amateur Theatre Festival of Karditsa is held every year towards the end of March and is organised with the involvement of the Municipality of Karditsa. The Ecological Festival of Karditsa takes place every September; here, too, the municipality is a co-organiser. Towards the end of April, OikoSfaira, the Karditsa Regional Unit and the Municipality of Karditsa organise the Spring Festival of Nature. These different dates—late March, towards the end of April and September—provide an initial guide to the seasons. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these festivals, check the specific event date.
The Choir Festival has been held in Karditsa since 1983, with leading choirs from around the world, renowned orchestras and distinguished soloists taking part. Dance groups from around the world perform at the Karaiskakia, and the programme also includes many other events and activities. The two offerings have different focuses: the Choir Festival centres on choirs, orchestras and soloists, while the Karaiskakia brings together dance groups and other programme events.
History, Architecture and Art in Karditsa
The Archaeological Museum of Karditsa opened in 2010 and documents the region’s cultural development from the Palaeolithic period to Late Antiquity. The Municipal Market of Karditsa offers a different subject: built in the late 1920s, it is an example of modern architecture in concrete, metal and glass. It was later restored for cultural uses and low-impact leisure activities.
The Municipal Gallery of Karditsa holds temporary exhibitions featuring works from its collection and works by contemporary artists. It also offers educational activities that introduce audiences, especially young people, to art and culture. This allows you to choose among Karditsa’s cultural offerings according to your interests: archaeological periods, modern architecture, or changing art exhibitions and educational activities.
Walks and Landscapes in Karditsa
Paparantsa Grove, also known as “A Thousand Trees,” lies south and west of the city of Karditsa, on the edge of the Karditsa municipal district. It is designated as a landscape of special natural beauty. Unpaved roads and paths run through the grove and are suitable for walking.
Karditsa’s squares and pedestrian streets are ideal for leisurely walks. Pafsilipo Park is a central green space in the city and offers opportunities for relaxation and recreation. Karditsa’s completely flat topography also makes environmentally friendly travel by bicycle easy. There are therefore different urban and natural settings to choose from for walks: unpaved paths in the grove, squares and pedestrian streets in the city, and the central park.
