Trianda: Beach, Windsurfing and Filerimos
Accommodation in Trianda
For planning your trip to Trianda, you can distinguish between two different interests: the beach and water sports at Ialysos Beach, and cultural sites in the surrounding area, including the sites on the green hill of Filerimos. These topics have different focuses. By the water, the focus is on the nature of the coastline, the use of individual beach sections and water sports options; at the historic sites, the main features are ancient ruins, a monastery, a church building and religious imagery.
Beach and water sports at Ialysos Beach
The water at Ialysos Beach is clear and blue; the beach consists of sand and pebbles. Some sections are reserved for guests of the adjoining hotel; these conditions may change. The nature of the coastline and the rules for its use answer different questions: sand and pebbles describe the beach, while the reservation applies to individual sections. If you include time at the beach in your plans, take this distinction into account and check the current situation before your visit.
Windsurfing lessons for beginners and equipment rental for experienced participants are offered at Ialysos Beach. In Ialysós, windsurfing and jet skiing are listed at three locations. The number of providers and their operating status may change. To help you choose, be clear about what you are looking for: a beginner lesson, equipment rental or jet skiing. Check the availability of the activity in question in advance.
Ancient sites on Filerimos
The Acropolis of Ialysos, ancient ruins and the Monastery of the Virgin Mary are located on the green hill of Filerimos, near Trianda. The ruins of the ancient city of Ialysos lie on the mountain, just outside the modern town. The Acropolis and the ruins are the archaeological highlights; the monastery offers a different cultural point of interest. This lets you decide in advance whether to include ancient sites, a monastery or both in your travel plans.
A sloping path with 33 stone steps leads to the Acropolis of Ialysos and the Monastery of Our Lady of Filerimos. If you include these destinations in your travel plans, check the current access conditions in advance.
Church architecture and religious imagery
The small, single-storey underground Byzantine church of Agios Georgios tou Hostou is also located near Trianda. Its frescoes depict the Knights from the 14th and 15th centuries. The church’s design and frescoes offer a different cultural focus from the Acropolis, ruins or monastery: here, the interest lies in a small church building and its imagery.
The Calvary corridor at Panagia Filerimou begins opposite the entrance, outside the enclosure. On one side are twelve depictions of the Passion of Christ, mounted on plinths. Together with the church’s frescoes, these illustrate the difference between subject matter and forms of depiction: the Passion of Christ on twelve plinths, as compared with depictions of the Knights in frescoes.
