Sgourou: Culture and Geology at the Megaron
Accommodation in Sgourou
For planning a trip to Sgourou, the Rhodes Cultural and Geological Megaron and its collections offer a cultural and geological focus. The Megaron is located in the Sgourou area. The cultural department is on the ground floor, the folklore department on the first floor, and the geological-mineralogical department in the basement. Its subject matter ranges from marble mosaics and themes from Greek mythology to everyday objects, minerals, fossils and volcanic products. The site therefore cannot be reduced to a single collection theme.
Culture, Folklore and Geology at the Megaron
The cultural department is on the ground floor. It includes marble mosaics and ceiling paintings depicting themes from Greek mythology. Gilded meanders, classical furniture, vessels and books complement this section. The collection thus combines mythological imagery with other cultural objects. If you are interested in classical culture, you will find several different types of exhibits here within the same department.
The folklore department on the first floor focuses on different themes. Old household and gardening tools are displayed alongside paintings, Rhodian plates and traditional costumes. Moving from the ground floor to the first floor also means a shift in the collection's focus: mythological motifs and classical furniture give way to household and garden objects, as well as other folkloric items. This makes the folklore department a distinct focus alongside the cultural department.
The geological-mineralogical department is in the basement. It includes stuffed fish and animals, as well as, above all, 35 display cases of minerals, rocks, fossils and volcanic products. This collection differs markedly from the cultural and folklore themes on the upper floors: here, natural history and geological materials take centre stage. If you would like to compare different subject areas, you can therefore consider both cultural objects and geological and mineralogical collections.
The Rhodes Cultural and Geological Megaron has received awards from various institutions for its contribution to culture. These include the Kapodistrian University of Athens and UNESCO. The award adds another cultural dimension to the site's broad range of subjects.
Equestrian Facility in the Asgourou Area
Another area of interest is the equestrian facility of the “Κάδμος” Riding Club in the Asgourou area. It includes a 60 × 80 arena that can host Grand Prix show jumping and dressage competitions. This gives the sporting venue two clearly defined disciplines. Unlike the Megaron, with its collections, the focus here is an equestrian facility.
If you would like to include the equestrian facility in your travel plans, check visiting options in advance. If you are interested in a competition, also check whether a suitable event is taking place and whether guests can attend. The named disciplines give you a clear idea of the facility's sporting focus, but do not replace checking the visiting conditions.
Choose the Focus of Your Trip
When planning your hotel and trip, you can first decide which of these interests matters most to you. The Megaron brings together culture, folklore and geology in three different departments. The equestrian facility is dedicated to show jumping and dressage. These areas of interest can be considered separately and help you match local offerings to your own travel plans without conflating cultural attractions and equestrian sport.
