Village Character and Surroundings

Narrow alleys and whitewashed houses define Tholaria. The houses feature distinctive chimneys topped with broken jugs, while terraces line the surrounding slopes. The chimneys stand out alongside the bright façades, and the terraces add to the impression of the hillsides. The mountains surrounding Tholaria are also part of its setting and are rich in flowers and herbs. This plant life adds a landscape dimension to the description of the destination. If you consider the natural surroundings as well as the alleys and architecture when choosing a place to stay, the surrounding mountains are among Tholaria’s defining features.

The Church of Agioi Anargyroi in Tholaria is visible from afar. Its blue dome, two bell towers, and dark red outlines give it a distinctive appearance. Alongside the characteristic details of the houses, it is a striking landmark in the village. Traditional cafés and tavernas are also part of the village’s character. These establishments add another dimension to the architectural features, which may also play a role when choosing between different destinations.

Hiking and Historical Traces

The 4.5-kilometer Melania hiking trail connects Aegiali Bay with Lagada and Tholaria. It passes ruins from the Early Cycladic period and takes two hours. The route therefore links three named places and an archaeological feature along the way. If you would like to include historical traces in a hike, this is a specific feature of the Melania Trail.

A hiking trail from Tholaria to the ancient settlement of Ancient Aegiali takes about 15 minutes. The settlement lies opposite Tholaria on the 212-meter-high Vigla Hill and offers a view of the Mikri-Glifada Gorge. Compared with the two-hour Melania Trail, the stated walking time is considerably shorter; the destinations also differ: Ancient Aegiali lies opposite Tholaria, while the Melania Trail connects Aegiali Bay, Lagada, and Tholaria and passes Early Cycladic ruins. This lets you weigh the time, destination, and historical significance together.

At Ancient Aegiali, only a few sections of wall, rock carvings in the surrounding cliffs, and statues from the Hellenistic period remain. Vigla was the acropolis of its time; the largest sculpture from the Cycladic period was found there. Around Tholaria, you can encounter different kinds of historical evidence: Early Cycladic ruins along the Melania Trail, a find on Vigla, and Hellenistic statues at the ancient settlement.

Mikri Vlychada Beach in Tholaria can also be included in your trip plans. It is accessible only by hiking. For this destination, hiking is not just a possible activity but a prerequisite for access. If the beach is important to your trip, include the required hike as part of the destination.
