Aperathos: Museums and Collections
Accommodation in Aperathos
The museums in Aperathos focus on a range of cultural themes: natural history, geology, Early Cycladic archaeology and folklore. If you plan your stay around your interests, you can choose between natural and marine history, the history of the Earth, an archaeological collection and objects from everyday life. The individual collections offer concrete points of reference, from samples of local flora and fauna to tools and woven fabrics.
Natural history between sea and land
The Natural History Museum of Apiranthos was established in 1966. It displays numerous samples of local flora and fauna and is divided into a section focused on the sea and one focused on the land. This division organizes the collection into two broad subject areas, making its marine and terrestrial focus immediately clear.
The collection also includes an aquarium, a shell collection, dolphin skeletons and whale bones. These exhibits add further natural history topics to the samples of local flora and fauna. Visitors particularly interested in nature will therefore find a different focus here than in the geological collection, with its minerals, rocks and ores, or in the Folklore Museum, with its objects related to work and everyday culture.
Geology and the museum’s history
The Geological Museum of Apeiranthos began in 1964, on the initiative of Manolis Glezos, as a small collection of minerals, rocks and ores in the Apeiranthos primary school building. These materials gave the collection a clear geological focus from the outset. This distinguishes it from the natural history collection, with its samples of flora and fauna, as well as from the Folklore Museum’s tools and textiles.
In 2016, the “Naxos Hall” was established. A former museum hall was redesigned to house the exhibition “The Aegean Sea and the World.” Both the development of the original mineral collection and later exhibition-design initiatives are therefore part of the museum’s history. The two dates are clearly distinct: 1964 marks the beginning of the collection, while 2016 marks the establishment of the Naxos Hall.
Folklore: agriculture, music and textiles
The Folklore Museum of Apiranthos displays tools used to grow, harvest and thresh crops, as well as to make bread. The selection connects several stages of agricultural work, from cultivation to grain processing. The focus is therefore not only on finished products, but also on the tools associated with these tasks.
The museum also displays the instruments dubaki, tsabouna and souvliari, as well as traditional costumes and woven fabrics. The shift in subject matter from fieldwork and breadmaking to music, clothing and textiles highlights the breadth of the collection. If you are interested in everyday culture, you can explore different kinds of objects here, rather than focusing on just one area such as agriculture or clothing.
Early Cycladic archaeology
The Early Cycladic collection at the Apeiranthos Museum is considered one of the most important of its kind worldwide and probably the third most important in Greece. This assessment is deliberately qualified: its standing within Greece is described as probable. As an archaeological focus, the collection adds another perspective to the collections of Aperathos, alongside natural history, geology and the everyday objects in the Folklore Museum.
For your interests, this distinction offers a practical guide: nature specimens, geological materials, folkloric objects and Early Cycladic archaeology represent clearly distinct museum themes. You can therefore consider before your trip which collection areas are most relevant to you and view Aperathos accordingly as a cultural destination.
