Sérifos combines geology shaped by iron and granite with varied coastlines and traces of mining. The following features of the island offer specific points of reference before you choose hotels for your stay.

Coastline and Geology

The geology of Sérifos is shaped by iron and granite. Its coastal landscape includes rocky shores, pebble beaches, golden sandy beaches, small coves, and deep blue waters. The coastline therefore cannot be reduced to a single type of beach. Psili Ammos is considered a particularly notable beach on Sérifos and has been described by international media as one of Europe’s twenty best beaches. If a single beach is important to your decision, this classification offers a specific point of reference; at the same time, the island’s coastal appeal extends beyond Psili Ammos.

Hiking: Network and Individual Trail

Sérifos’s official hiking trail network covers more than 46.4 kilometers. The Mining Gallery hiking trail is listed as 920 meters long. The two figures describe different scales: one is the total length of the network, the other the length of a named trail. For planning your trip, it therefore makes sense to consider the network as a whole separately from an individual trail. This way, you can decide whether to start by looking at the hiking trail network or to consider a specific trail such as Mining Gallery.

Mining Traces in Koutalas and Mega Livadi

West of the village of Koutalas are mining facilities with rail systems, ore transport carts, a weighing facility, and a loading bridge. These features cover different aspects of ore handling: transport by rail and cart, weighing, and loading. Since 2002, the Koutalas Cave and the mineral deposits—or iron mines—on Sérifos have been included in the Aegean Geological Monuments Atlas of the Ministry of the Aegean. In addition, the Natura 2000 site GR4220009 is associated with the Koutalas area on Sérifos. Here, therefore, industrial mining traces, geological heritage, and a Natura 2000 designation are distinct topics.

On the left side of Mega Livadi Bay, the mining remains can be described as an open-air mining museum. They include underground tunnels, iron rails, partially destroyed bridges, ore carts, and another loading bridge. Compared with the facilities mentioned in Koutalas, the description of Mega Livadi also includes tunnels and partially destroyed bridges. The two places therefore offer different points of reference if you are interested in the mining traces on Sérifos.

Structures and Historical Interpretations

The Taxiarches Monastery in northern Sérifos was built as a fortified complex, with a high surrounding wall, battlements, and lookout posts. These fortifications have not survived. It is therefore important to distinguish between the monastery’s original design and the defensive features that no longer exist when considering its history.

Psaropirgos is also known by the names “Throne of the Cyclops,” “Psaros Tower,” and “Kanapes.” The structure is made of elongated slate slabs and measures approximately 8.4 meters long and 4.2 meters wide. Its name, material, and approximate measurements offer different points of reference: they describe what the structure is called, what it is made of, and its approximate size.

There are some ruins at Gria Castle. An ancient wall, probably more than two meters high, indicates a strong fortification. It is unclear whether the site was originally a small village or a collection of scattered defensive towers. This uncertainty is part of the site’s description and should be retained when interpreting it.

Another cave on Sérifos, associated with the Cyclops Polyphemus, collapsed and is no longer accessible. This is an important practical distinction from the island’s other cave and mining-related features.
