Artemonas: Windmill Views, Churches and Hiking Trails

Artemonas lies a mile northwest of Apollonia and is the island’s largest village. Its winding streets and lanes define the place. Windmills and Views

In Artemonas’s eastern windmill area, also called Bella Vista, the view stretches to Kastro, the open sea and many other Cycladic islands. From the windmill hill, the view takes in almost all of Sifnos, Kastro, the surrounding islands and the Aegean Sea; visibility may vary depending on conditions. There are two windmills on the hill, one of which has been restored.

Churches and Exhibitions

Artemonas is home to notable old churches and traditional pottery workshops. Panagia Kontchi is the village’s central church. It is said to have stood on the site of an ancient temple dedicated to Artemis Ekvatiria, a goddess who protected arriving travelers. The connection with the temple is a traditional belief.

The exhibition “Us in our homes in the old days” displays personal and official service records belonging to the poet Ioannis Gryparis, who was from Artemonas, as well as a couch that belonged to him. These objects give the exhibition a personal connection: alongside official records are mementos from the life of a named poet.

Another exhibition, “Us at Home in the Old Days” by Ioannis Atsonios, is located next to the church of Panagia tou Bali. It features a traditionally furnished house with everyday objects from earlier times, including an 1880 cradle from Constantinople. The exhibition has been open since 2008. Public visiting hours are listed as evenings from 7 to 11 p.m., from July 15 to September 15. Check current opening details before visiting.

The folklore exhibition “Εμείς παλιά στα σπίτια μας” by the Cultural Association of Sifnos is also located next to Panagia tou Bali. It operates during the summer months; check current visiting information in advance.

Hiking Routes from Artemonas

Route 7 leads from Artemonas’s main square to the church of Agios Simeon. It is 6 km long; the stated walking time is 2 hours and 15 minutes. Route 8 leads from the same square to the church of Agios Sostis, is 5.9 km long and has a stated walking time of 2 hours. According to these figures, Route 8 is slightly shorter and takes slightly less time. The destinations also differ: Agios Simeon or Agios Sostis.

Another route starts in Artemonas and heads toward Panagia Poulati, then continues toward Kastro. If you wish, you can go as far as Faros; from there, the route runs along the sea toward Chrysopigi. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Food Festival in September

Every year in September, Artemonas hosts the three-day Cycladic Gastronomy Festival “Νικόλαος Τσελεμεντές.” The program includes demonstrations of local recipes, as well as cooking and confectionery competitions. If the festival fits your travel plans, check the dates for that year.
