Two churches and nearby Zarnata Castle are important landmarks for understanding the cultural heritage around Stavropigio. In the village stands the twin-aisled, cross-vaulted Church of Saint John the Baptist and Saint Nicholas; within the castle is the Church of Zoodochos Pigi. The castle is situated on a low hill between the settlements of Kambos and Stavropígion. The village church and the church in the castle grounds are separate buildings, which can be readily distinguished by their names, architecture and history.

The Church in Stavropígion

The Church of Saint John the Baptist and Saint Nicholas has two aisles and a cross-vaulted ceiling. These terms describe different features: “two-aisled” refers to the layout of the church interior, while “cross-vaulted” describes the shape of the ceiling. Its bell tower dates from 1810, and the church is decorated with several layers of frescoes. Its architectural profile thus encompasses the layout and vault, as well as a dated structural feature and its painted decoration.

If you want to understand the church’s architecture, it is worth considering these features separately: the number of aisles describes the interior, while a cross vault refers to a particular type of vault. The bell tower and frescoes add two further aspects to these architectural details. The fresco layers mentioned here belong to the village church; they should not be confused with the frescoes in Zoodochos Pigi within the castle.

Zarnata Castle Nearby

Zarnata Castle stands on a low hill between Kambos and Stavropígion. Its location offered a vantage point over the coastline and served to control the routes leading into the Mani hinterland. Sections of the wall survive; it follows the terrain and the line of the ancient fortification. In many places, it is more than three metres high. The location, the course of the fortifications and the surviving sections of wall each offer a different insight into the structure.

The castle’s history can be divided into several stages. It was probably built in the first half of the 15th century. The Ottomans captured and rebuilt it in 1670, giving the castle its present appearance. The early construction date is stated as probable, while the capture and rebuilding are dated to 1670. This distinction preserves both the uncertainty of the early date and the specific year given for the later turning point.

Zoodochos Pigi Within the Castle

The Church of Zoodochos Pigi stands within Zarnata Castle. It was built in 1780 and has a cross-vaulted ceiling. Its frescoes date from 1787. The building and its painted decoration are therefore associated with two different dates: 1780 refers to the church’s construction, and 1787 to the frescoes. This church is part of the castle grounds and is not the Church of Saint John the Baptist and Saint Nicholas in the village.

The dates for the two churches differ, which is useful when comparing their timelines: 1810 is given for the village church’s bell tower. For Zoodochos Pigi, the dates refer to its construction in 1780 and the painting of its frescoes in 1787. This makes it possible to distinguish the history of each building without inferring a construction date for the village church. Together, the churches and the castle offer a tangible focus for exploring the cultural history of Stavropigio and its immediate surroundings.
