Marathópolis is the port of the town of Gargaliani and lies in a coastal setting with several named beaches and the nearby island of Proti. Features that can be found in the town itself include a waterfront promenade with fish restaurants and cafés, as well as the Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior. Archaeological traces in the surrounding area and local feast days add to the picture. When choosing a destination, you can therefore consider local life, coastal destinations and cultural history as distinct points of interest.

Port and waterfront promenade

Marathópolis serves as the port of the town of Gargaliani. This connection places the town within its surroundings, while the waterfront promenade gives a concrete sense of its own character. Fish restaurants and cafés are located there. If you would like to keep a place with a promenade and dining options in mind when planning your trip, this is a useful reference point. Beaches and Proti Island

Nearby beaches include Lagouvardos, Ai-Giannakis, Vromoneri and Chrysi Akti, which is also called Mati. Proti is a nearby island and serves as a natural breakwater; it lies two nautical miles from the port of Marathos. Vourlia Beach on Proti is accessible only by boat from Marathópolis. In the shallow water off the beach lies the wreck of a merchant ship that was accidentally bombed by the Allies during the Second World War. The wreck provides shelter for rich underwater fauna and is considered a snorkeling attraction. A regional sea-kayaking route includes a visit to Proti, the island opposite Marathópolis, after exploring beaches along the Ionian Sea. The coastal experiences differ in form: Vourlia is a single beach destination associated with the wreck and snorkeling, while the kayaking route combines explorations of beaches along the Ionian Sea with a visit to Proti.

Church, archaeology and feast days

The Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior is located in the town. At the port of Dialiskari, two kilometers from Marathópolis, significant ancient finds came to light in the 1920s and 1930s, mainly from Roman times. These finds led to the port being identified with ancient Erana. At the southern end of nearby Proti Island are the ruins of a Mycenaean acropolis; some sections of the walls are still standing. The two places therefore represent different historical focal points: Mycenaean remains on Proti and mainly Roman finds at Dialiskari.
