Elos can be explored for trip planning through three distinct points of reference: the village near the mouth of the Evrotas, the Apostolakeia, and Kyaní Aktí Élos beach to the south. Sparta also provides a distance reference. When looking for a hotel, first consider whether you would prefer to plan your trip around the Apostolakeia or the nearby coastal landscape.

Location and orientation

Elos is located near the mouth of the Evrotas River. The village is 43 kilometres from Sparta. These details offer two different points of reference: its location near a river mouth and its distance from another city. Together with the coastline south of the village, they allow you to consider the area from several perspectives without equating Elos with Kyaní Aktí Élos beach.

Kyaní Aktí Élos and the coast

The nearby Kyaní Aktí Élos beach lies south of Elos, along the northern coast of the Gulf of Laconia. It is 5.2 kilometres long and sandy. Sand dunes and tamarisk growth in places add to the landscape. The beach therefore offers its own point of reference for trip planning: it is part of the area south of the village, while the Apostolakeia take place in Elos.

If the coastal landscape is important to your stay, keep this distinction in mind when choosing a specific hotel. Check the stated location of each option in relation to what matters most to you, rather than treating the beach and the village name as one and the same. The sandy beach's length, dunes and tamarisks describe different features: the beach's extent and its dune landscape, which is partly covered with vegetation.

Apostolakeia and cultural references

The Apostolakeia are a long-established series of events in Elos. In its cultural summer announcement for 2026, the municipality links them with tradition, gastronomy and sport. The 2025 Apostolakeia programme included sports activities for all age groups, children's competitions and tournaments. If the events are one of the reasons for your trip, check the dates for your preferred travel period before booking a hotel.

Older traditions also offer a distinct glimpse of Elos. According to tradition, Éleios, the son of Perseus, is regarded as the founder of the village. In Homer's Iliad, Elos is described in the Catalogue of Ships using the Greek phrase “έφαλον πτολίεθρον”; the expression is rendered as “a steep city with an acropolis.” Thus, a legendary founder and a literary description stand alongside one another as two distinct cultural references.

Choosing hotels in Elos

The distance of 43 kilometres from Sparta adds to this overview, but does not replace checking the specific location of an accommodation option. Compare each hotel's details with the area that matters to your stay. This way, you can tailor your search to the destination's distinctive features without confusing the village with the nearby coast.
