Discover Míloi: Lerna, trails and railway station history
Accommodation in Míloi
Míloi combines a long history of settlement with archaeological traces and practical opportunities to explore the village and its surroundings on foot. Springs, historical events and railway station buildings add to this picture. Two distinctions are especially useful when planning your trip: the history spans settlement over thousands of years as well as specifically dated events, and the hiking trails vary in length and destination.
Springs and trails in Míloi
The springs of the Pontinos River, also known as the Lerna Springs, flow from Pontinos Hill to the sea. Their water level varies seasonally. The hill is also one of the named destinations on the longer hiking trail, while the springs are a distinctive feature of the landscape in their own right.
A 1 km circular hiking trail allows visitors to Míloi to explore the village's monuments and other sights. Destinations along the route include the Sanctuary of Demeter Prosymna and Dionysus. This circular trail thus combines a route through the village with a specifically named sanctuary and other sights.
The 5 km hiking trail offers a different scale: it takes in sights west of the settlement of Míloi, on Pontinos Hill and in its surroundings; a return route of the same length is indicated. Compared with the circular trail, the options differ both in length and destination: village sights on one hand, and destinations west of the settlement and on the hill on the other. This comparison helps you choose a tour based on its distance and the destinations named.
Lerna and the history of the village
The settlement of Lerna stood in what is now the village of Míloi and was inhabited for 5,000 years. Its history stretches from the Neolithic to the Mycenaean period, from the 6th to the 1st millennium BC. This long span describes settlement across several eras; one more precisely dated phase reveals another chapter in the village's history.
During Early Helladic Phase II, the Lerna III phase from 2700 to 2200 BC, the settlement was given a strong fortification wall on its southern side, with a gate and two towers. The dates and the structures described place this detail within a specific period of the settlement's long history.
A much later historical milestone is the Battle of Mýloi. It took place on June 13, 1825, during the Greek War of Independence, in the village of the same name. Thus, alongside settlement spanning thousands of years, the village's history also includes a specifically dated event from the 19th century.
Mýloi Railway Station
Mýloi Railway Station is an important part of the history of railways in Greece. Its buildings were constructed between 1887 and 1910. This construction period came after the Battle of 1825, adding another clearly distinct layer to the village's history. Together with Lerna, the railway station shows how different eras each have their own historical points of reference in Míloi.
