Kantia by the Sea
Accommodation in Kantia
Kantia is a small seaside village between Drepano and Iria, about 17 kilometres from Nafplio. Two main draws stand side by side when choosing this destination: the beach and historic landmarks such as the Church of Agios Nikolaos, the ruins of the Mycenaean acropolis and the Aga Tower. This lets you choose Kantia based on the things that really matter for your trip.
The Beach and Its Different Atmospheres
Kantia Beach is approximately four kilometres long. A busy beach bar and quiet, almost private stretches offer different atmospheres. If you weigh a lively setting differently from quieter areas when choosing a destination, this contrast provides a practical point of reference. The length answers a different question from the description of the areas: it conveys the beach’s extent, while the beach bar and quiet spots give you a sense of the coastline’s character.
Family-oriented sections of the beach have sun loungers on sand with fine gravel. The ground should therefore be understood as a mixture of sand and fine gravel, not as uniformly fine sand. If you consider the surface and sun loungers as well as the beach’s atmosphere, these are specific features that can help refine your choice of destination. The coastline shapes your choice of location not just through its size; the different sections also give you criteria for the kind of setting you want. The length describes the beach as a whole; by contrast, the sun loungers and the surface of sand with fine gravel refer to the family-oriented sections.
Church, Acropolis and Aga Tower
The Church of Agios Nikolaos is located at the entrance to the village. The year 1381 is carved above the entrance on its west side; the exact year the church was built is unknown.
The ruins of Kantia’s Mycenaean acropolis lie on Agia Eleousa Hill, near the Aga Tower. The partly ruined Aga Tower is a tower house and was the residence of the local Aga. The term “tower house” describes the building’s design, while “residence” describes its former function. Thus, two distinct historical points of interest stand side by side on Agia Eleousa: the acropolis as an archaeological landmark and the tower with its former function as a home. The church and its inscription add another, different detail to the village’s history.
Location and Getting to the Beach
Kantia Beach can be reached by car from the surrounding areas. Free parking is available along the beach. Check availability locally before your arrival, as parking information may change. When planning a beach visit, both getting there and parking are separate considerations.
