Porto Cheli lies on an oval, sheltered bay that forms a natural harbor. The beaches and ancient traces of Alieis add a scenic and historical dimension to its maritime setting. If you are looking for a hotel in Porto Cheli, you can consider the coastal location, connections to Spetses, and the history of Alieis as different focal points when planning your trip.

Bay and harbor

The municipality describes the harbor of Porto Cheli as the best-protected harbor in Argolida. It cites the outer area of its entrance and the underwater and above-water terrain as reasons. The comparison refers to Argolida; the description of the oval, sheltered bay, by contrast, concerns the coastline directly at the town.

Beaches and coastal scenery

The beaches around Porto Cheli combine turquoise waters and pine forests that reach almost to the shore, with small coves and open, sunny stretches of coast. The Greek National Tourism Organization describes this beach landscape as one of the most distinctive in Ermionida. From Hinitsa Beach, you can look out at the small island directly opposite. Ververonda lies beyond the lagoon. Hinitsa is therefore known for the island view from the beach, while Ververonda is known for its location beyond the lagoon.

Coastal stretches and access

Korakia has two stretches of shore and coarse pebbles. The beach is accessible via an unpaved road; road conditions may vary. You can reach beaches and coves that are not easily accessible by road by renting a small boat or an RIB. For Korakia, the unpaved access road is the specific detail; the option of traveling by boat applies to coastal stretches that are not easily reached by road.

Getting there and connections to Spetses

KTEL intercity buses connect Porto Cheli with Athens, Nafplio, Argos, and surrounding towns. Check the latest timetables before traveling by bus. Kosta is 4 km from Porto Cheli; from there, you can reach Spetses by water taxi, kaiki, or ferry. Services and timetables may change, so it is worth checking the latest connections before your trip. The bus routes serve the named destinations on land, while the connection to Spetses from Kosta is by water.

Alieis and a recurring tradition

The partly submerged ruins of the ancient city of Alieis lie opposite the settlement of Porto Cheli. Sections of the defensive walls found at Alieis are located both on land and in the sea; the municipality describes them as outstanding examples of classical fortification. Part of the Acropolis of Alieis survives, and its construction is dated to around 436 BC. The historical references thus differ in type: the walls are described by their locations on land and in the sea, while the Acropolis is described in terms of a surviving section and an approximate date.

A municipal post dated April 14, 2026, reports that the “Κάψιμο του Ιούδα” (Burning of Judas) is observed every year in Porto Cheli and Ermioni. For Porto Cheli, it names the harbor as the venue.
