Vastas sits on a gentle slope at an elevation of 860 metres and was formerly called Μπάστας. The village is home to the parish church Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου and has a history of watermills. Route information also highlights different options: one route leads from Vástas to the summit of Τετράζιο; Vastas is also the meeting point of two sections of the Arcadian Trail circuit. You can consider these local cultural and walking themes as possible focuses for your stay.

Parish Church and Building History

Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου is the parish church of Vastas, framed by a bell tower. The church was built in 1911, completed in 1938 and restored in 2011; the bell tower was built in 1912. The tower’s construction date thus falls between the start and completion of the church building, while the restoration took place much later. This timeline offers a concrete way to explore the church’s building history.

The Former Watermills

Grain was once milled in three watermills in Vastas. The mill of Λετζέρης was powered by water from Κρύα Βρύση; the mills of Λούφας and Χοντρός were fed by the spring Αγία Θεοδώρα. Mill channels ran on both sides of the Χάραδρος. This arrangement distinguishes one mill supplied by water from Κρύα Βρύση from two mills fed by the spring Αγία Θεοδώρα. Together with the channels on both sides of the Χάραδρος, these water sources illustrate the village’s former grain processing. The renovated mill of Χοντρός is in the courtyard of the “Νερόμυλος του Νικόλα” tavern near Αγία Θεοδώρα; check local conditions before visiting.

Religious Landmark Nearby

The Byzantine church Αγία Θεοδώρα lies near Vastas and is considered the most important religious landmark in the Vastas area. The religious theme thus includes both the parish church in the village and a Byzantine landmark nearby.

Routes and Trail Information

The Vástas–Προφήτης Ηλίας route leads to the summit of Τετράζιο and follows an unpaved road. The surface is a practical consideration for your plans; check local conditions before setting out. Vastas is also the meeting point of the Λύκαιο–Βάστας and Βάστας–Ίσαρης sections of the Arcadian Trail circuit. When choosing a walk, you can distinguish between a named summit destination and the meeting point of two circuit sections. Check local conditions for your specific route before setting out.

An older route description gives the length of the old path between Vastas and Αγία Θεοδώρα as two kilometres; it once continued towards Messinia. This information combines a distance with the path’s former continuation. If you are considering this connection for a current walking plan, check access and conditions locally.
