Discover Leondari: Churches, Castle and Local History
Accommodation in Leondari
Leondari is a historic, traditional settlement in Falaisia on the northern foothills of Mount Taygetus. The village lies at an elevation of about 540 metres. Stone houses, churches and public buildings are part of its settlement landscape; the streets follow the slope below the castle. Its setting connects the buildings on the hillside with the elevated castle site, giving the village a distinct topographic character.
Local History and Buildings
From 1300 to 1391, the village was the seat of the Despots of Morea. Its position on old routes towards Messenia and Laconia gave it strategic and administrative importance. This historical role can be linked chronologically to two buildings: both the Church of the Holy Apostles and the Chapel of the Taxiarchs date from the 14th century. The political history of the village and the sacred architecture of the same period thus stand side by side.
The Church of the Holy Apostles
The church stands on the central square and dates from the 14th century. Its architecture combines features of a basilica with a more developed Byzantine style. Its furnishings include Byzantine-style frescoes, a Byzantine-style marble iconostasis and a multicoloured mosaic floor. The building and its furnishings offer different perspectives: the basilica features help classify the architecture, while the frescoes, marble iconostasis and mosaic floor describe the church’s design.
According to an announcement dated 4 June 2018, a visit to the Church of the Holy Apostles required prior coordination with the Ephorate of Antiquities. Before your visit, check what arrangements currently apply.
The Castle and Chapel on the Castle Path
The ruins of a medieval Frankish castle lie on the hill beside Leondari; the hill rises above the village. The Chapel of the Taxiarchs stands on the Castle Path and also dates from the 14th century. This distinguishes three different points of reference in the village: the central square with the Church of the Holy Apostles, the Castle Path with the chapel, and the elevated hill with the castle ruins. This spatial orientation helps place the historic buildings in relation to one another.
Routes and Planning Your Stay
Leondari is a starting point for routes towards Falaisia, the northern Taygetus and ancient Megalopolis. This practical route planning differs from the history of the older routes: the village’s position on old roads to Messenia and Laconia gave it historical importance. You can therefore focus your stay on Leondari’s buildings and history or include routes in the directions mentioned. Check the route and conditions before setting out on a specific trip.
If you are looking for a hotel in Leondari, the focus of your stay can guide your choice. If you want to concentrate on the historic buildings, the central square, the Castle Path and the hill are useful points of reference. If you are also planning routes, take their direction into account. When considering a specific hotel offer, compare the location description with your own plans.
