Vasilikos: Holiday resort near six beaches
Accommodation in Vasilikos
Vasilikos, also called Vasiliko, is a small, picturesque holiday resort 15.5 kilometres southeast of Zakynthos Town.
Nearby beaches
Gerakas, Porto Roma, Agios Nikolaos, Banana, Porto Zoro and Kaminia are the nearby beaches. You can swim, sunbathe and enjoy water sports at these beaches; many are well developed. The six names give you specific options for planning your day. You can choose where to go based on whether you would rather spend time in the water, sunbathing or doing water sports. Facilities and organisation may change. If certain facilities are important to you, check the conditions at the beach in question in advance.
Nature and marine conservation
In Gerakas–Vasilikos, nearby, you will find the information centre, also known as the research station, of the Zakynthos National Marine Park. The facility has been operating since 2014. If you plan to visit, check access arrangements in advance. The loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) breeds on the protected island of Pelouzo, in the Municipality of Zakynthos. For travellers interested in marine conservation, there are two points of interest: a research facility and a protected breeding site.
Culture on Zakynthos
Zakynthos also offers subjects related to art and cultural history. The Museum of Zakynthos displays works of the Cretan School, Cretan-Ionian icons and works of Ionian Naturalism dating from the 15th to the 19th century. In the ground floor of the Museum of Solomos and Eminent Zakynthians, the mausoleum has housed the remains of the national poets Andreas Kalvos and Dionysios Solomos since 1968. This distinguishes the collection’s art movements and time period from a specific memorial site with a clear historical date.
Scenic places on Zakynthos
The Blue Caves are in the Aspros Vrachos area at Cape Skinari. Lake Keri is a wetland protected under the Ramsar Convention, a Natura site and a nature reserve within the Zakynthos National Marine Park. The Keri Lighthouse is known for panoramic sunset views of the Ionian Sea and the Myzithres rocks. These places represent different aspects of the landscape: a named location, several protected-area designations and a sunset viewpoint.
History, cheese and ferry connections
The Monastery of Agios Georgios sta Gremna in Volimes on Zakynthos was founded in 1535. Also in Volimes, Zakynthian Ladotyri cheese is made in cheese dairies and home workshops and sold as a local product. The monastery’s founding provides a historical point of reference; the cheese reflects regional production.
On Zakynthos, the port of Agios Nikolaos in Volimes provides a sea access point and connects the island to Kefalonia by ferry. If you include this connection in your travel plans, check the current timetable.
