Zakinthos: Churches, Museums and City History
Accommodation in Zakinthos
The city of Zakinthos can be explored through several distinct cultural themes: historic churches, specialized collections and arcades in central streets. Together, they offer different ways to engage with the city’s history—from stories of construction and restoration to art, written records and remembrance. If you are looking for a hotel for a culture-focused trip, these themes can help you understand the character of the destination and weigh your own interests.
Churches and historical periods
Agios Nikolaos tou Molou was founded on a small island that was later connected to the mainland through land reclamation. The church’s history therefore encompasses both its original location and the subsequent changes to the local landscape. Panagia ton Angelon represents a different building history: the notaries’ guild built it in 1687. After the earthquakes, it was rebuilt on the same site, using the same materials and in the same architectural style. Here, the location, materials and design are explicitly linked.
The Church of Agios Charalambos is also associated with a specific historical event. It was built in 1729 by order of the Provveditore Marc. Dolfin, in gratitude for the city’s rescue from the plague that broke out in 1728. The former Faneromeni Church, meanwhile, dates back to the 15th century. It was considered one of the most beautiful churches in Greece and was especially rich in works of art by leading representatives of the Ionian School. These churches therefore highlight different aspects: the founding and changing of a site, restoration, a historical event and the historical significance of works of art.
Museums, libraries and collections
The Museum of Zakynthos is housed in a neoclassical building on the city’s central square and displays a significant collection of post-Byzantine paintings. The Post-Byzantine Museum of Zakynthos is a separate institution: it is located in the city center on Solomos Square and houses works of art from the Ionian School. The two museums offer different points of interest for anyone interested in art and cultural history.
The Roma Mansion Museum brings together several types of collections. Its library contains more than 10,000 rare editions, manuscripts, maps and prints. The museum also preserves memorabilia from the 15th to the 20th century connected with the modern history of Greece. Written and graphic materials are presented alongside objects whose historical context spans several centuries.
The Grigorios Xenopoulos Museum, housed in the writer’s home on the street named after him, contains personal belongings, manuscripts and editions of his works. Its collection also includes issues of the magazine «Η Διάπλασις των Παίδων». The Public Library of Zakynthos holds books, newspapers and printed materials from before the earthquake. These collections offer different points of focus: personal and literary records, magazines, and written materials from an earlier period.
Arcades in the cityscape
Wide arcades characterize the central streets of Zakynthos Town. These include Rouga-Platia, comprising Alexandrou Roma and 21is Maiou streets, and Strata Marina, which corresponds to Konstantinou Lombardou. The arcades are an architectural remnant of old Zakynthos, which was destroyed in 1953. The street names place this architectural feature within the cityscape, while its historical significance extends beyond individual buildings. As you find your way between churches, collections and architecture, the arcades offer a distinct focus on the city’s history.
Across the wider destination of Zakynthos
Beyond the city of Zakinthos, the wider destination of Zakynthos encompasses other cultural and natural points of interest. In the mausoleum on the ground floor of the Museum of Solomos and Eminent Zakynthians, the remains of national poets Andreas Kalvos and Dionysios Solomos have rested since 1968. The Blue Caves are located in the Aspros Vrachos area at Cape Skinari. Lake Keri is a wetland protected under the Ramsar Convention, a Natura site and a nature reserve within the Zakynthos National Marine Park. The Keri Lighthouse is known for panoramic sunset views over the Ionian Sea and the rocks of Myzithres. These themes complement the city’s highlights with other cultural and landscape features of the destination.
