Acharavi brings together two distinct interests: the folklore museum and its collection about Corfu, and the water sports available in the area. The museum explores various aspects of the island’s history; on the water, activities range from banana boat rides to stand-up paddleboarding. You can consider these local interests separately when planning your trip. Other cultural and natural attractions on Corfu add to the picture of the island without conflating Acharavi with other places.

Acharavi Folklore Museum: Corfu Across Three Centuries

The Acharavi Folklore Museum displays objects, photographs, drawings, and texts about Corfu from the past three centuries. The collection includes old photographs, books and documents dating from 1862, coins from the period of the Ionian State, and local costumes from 1800. Furniture from a traditional household is also on display.

Other exhibits and sections offer insights into different aspects of daily life and work: on display are a loom, a traditional olive press, a carpentry workshop, a shoemaker’s workshop, and a watermill. A kitchen, bedroom, and laundry room sit alongside agricultural tools and a section devoted to religious life. The collection therefore includes both individual historical objects and themes relating to domestic life, crafts, agriculture, and religion. The photographs and documents add written and visual records to this picture.

Corfu: More Cultural and Natural Attractions

Corfu’s Old Town has preserved almost all of its historic urban fabric; its buildings date from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. The Old Town and its two fortresses are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A digital guide for residents and visitors offers high-quality audiovisual material about more than 80 sights within the city. Check that the guide is available before your trip. The Museum of Asian Art is also located in the Old Town. Its collection includes more than 11,000 objects from China, Japan, India, the Himalayas, and Central Asia. From Corfu Port, you can reach the museum on bus line 2, on the Mantouki–Kanoni route; check the timetable before travelling.

Corfu’s landscape also offers a variety of ways to explore the island. In the municipal unit of Achilleion, ancient paths run through the wooded mountains of Agii Deka, Stavros, and Garouna and are suitable for hiking. The 180-kilometre Corfu Trail passes through several settlements; Benitses is one of its 13 daily stages. Benitses Beach is an organised, narrow sandy beach next to the marina, with facilities for people with disabilities. The villages of the municipal unit of Achilleion host numerous festivals and folk celebrations, as well as cultural events organised by the municipality; programmes vary.
