Preveza: Archaeology, urban history and coastline

The wider destination of Preveza offers archaeology, urban history, a coastal cycling route and regional products as distinct themes. Its cultural highlights range from the ancient city of Nikopolis to historic buildings in Preveza; the route and local produce offer further points of interest.

The archaeological site of Nikopolis has a main route and six secondary routes, which connect nine monumental areas. The Archaeological Museum of Nikopolis presents the city’s history spanning more than a thousand years through various aspects of its residents’ private and public lives. The site and museum offer different perspectives: the routes connect monumental areas, while the museum also focuses on the lives of the city’s residents.

Preveza’s urban history can also be traced through its buildings and their dates. The Venetian Clock Tower stands in the historic city centre and dates from 1752. The Church of Agios Athanasios is one of the oldest churches in Preveza; it was built during Venetian rule in the early 18th century and is known for rare frescoes dating from 1780. Pantokratoras Fortress was built in the early 19th century by Ali Pasha, to the plans of the French engineer Yadocourt. Its location allowed complete control of shipping at the entrance to the Amvrakikos Gulf.

For a more active focus, Preveza has a second coastal cycling route. It is about 10 kilometres long, has a low difficulty level, and connects the city beach, Kiani Akti, Pantokratoras, the fishing harbour, Alonaki and the settlement of Drosia. As road conditions can change, it is advisable to check the route’s condition before setting out.

Local products from Preveza include prawns from the Amvrakikos Gulf and the famous bottarga from the Amvrakikos Gulf. Alongside archaeological and historical themes, regional produce offers a distinct culinary perspective.

For a thematic overview, the region’s offerings are clearly distinct: Nikopolis and the buildings appeal to those interested in archaeology and urban history, while the second coastal cycling route offers a specific route with a stated difficulty level. Prawns and bottarga round out the selection with a culinary perspective on Preveza.
