Lygia combines a beach with cultural and historical attractions nearby. Preveza offers archaeological, architectural, and culinary points of interest. If you are looking for a hotel in Lygia, distinguishing between local attractions around Lygia and the broader themes of Preveza can help you organize your interests.

Lygia and the Nearby Area

Lygia Beach is near a landmark known as “Κάστρο της Δέσπως”. Riniasa Castle lies between the present-day municipalities of Riza and Lygia, in the vicinity of Lygia. Its architecture is Byzantine. The complex includes four defensive sections and an acropolis, which formed its highest fortified part.

One important caveat when planning a visit: access on foot is difficult and dangerous; necessary works have not been carried out, so the castle is practically inaccessible to visitors. Check conditions on site before planning a visit.

Culture, History, and Cycling Route in Preveza

In the wider destination of Preveza, the archaeological site of Nikopolis has a main route and six secondary routes connecting nine monumental areas. The Archaeological Museum of Nikopolis presents the city’s history of more than a thousand years through various aspects of the private and public lives of its inhabitants. The site and museum offer different perspectives on Nikopolis: the routes connect monumental areas, while the museum focuses on life in the city.

The Venetian Clock Tower of Preveza stands in the historic city center and dates from 1752. The Church of Agios Athanasios is one of the oldest churches in Preveza. It was built during Venetian rule in the early 18th century and is known for rare frescoes dating from 1780. The church’s architectural history and the clock tower’s specific construction year thus offer different chronological reference points.

The Pantokratoras Fortress in Preveza was built in the early 19th century by Ali Pasha, following the plans of the French engineer Yadocourt. Its location served to provide complete control of shipping at the entrance to the Amvrakikos Gulf. Agios Andreas Castle in Preveza was designated a listed monument by ministerial decision in October 1980.

Preveza’s second coastal cycling route is also a useful point of reference: it is about 10 kilometers long, has a low level of difficulty, and connects the city beach, Kiani Akti, Pantokratoras, the fishing harbor, Alonaki, and the settlement of Drosia. Length and difficulty describe two different characteristics of the route. Check road conditions before your ride.

Local products from Preveza include shrimp from the Amvrakikos Gulf and the famous bottarga from the same gulf. Regional foods thus complement the archaeological and architectural themes with a culinary perspective.
