Discover Platania: Church of the Prophet Elijah
Accommodation in Platania
In Platania, the Church of the Prophet Elijah is the parish church. It stands amphitheatrically near the edge of the settlement. Its construction and the frescoes inside reveal different historical layers and give culture-minded travelers a concrete point of reference for exploring the place.
Architectural features and frescoes of the church
Architectural features from the late Byzantine period can be found in several precisely identified locations: at the southern apse, in the upper part of the main apse, on the east wall above the two apses, and on the eastern section of the south wall. The older construction phase is therefore not associated with just one part of the building. Those interested in the architecture can read these details as a nuanced description of the building’s features.
The church interior is adorned with frescoes by painters from Kapesovo dating to the mid-18th century, as well as more recent frescoes. The dates therefore refer to different things: the late Byzantine classification applies to specific architectural features, while the mid-18th-century date refers to the frescoes by the painters from Kapesovo. This distinction helps visitors consider the building’s history and its wall paintings as separate aspects of the church, rather than combining them into a single period of construction.
Ioannina: Island and information center
The wider destination of Ioannina offers further cultural and natural attractions to complement your trip. Ioannina Island is one of only two inhabited lake islands in Greece. Its settlement is designated as a settlement of outstanding natural beauty and probably dates from the 16th century. Two monasteries were founded on the island during the Byzantine period: the Monastery of Saint Nicholas Philanthropenon, also known as Spanou, and the Monastery of Saint Nicholas Strategopoulou, also known as Diliou.
The Pamvotis Lake Information Center is also located on the island, in a traditional stone building that is listed as a protected monument. It presents information about the lake’s most important plants, as well as the fish, birds, amphibians and mammals that live there. If you plan to visit the center, confirm its operating conditions before your visit.
Ioannina Castle and museums
Ioannina Castle stands on a naturally fortified rocky peninsula. The earliest traces of settlement identified through archaeological investigations date to the Classical and Hellenistic periods. The castle is one of the oldest continuously inhabited fortified settlements in Greece. In its innermost area, in the Its Kale district, lies the tomb of Ali Pasha of Tepelen, one of the city’s significant historical sites.
The Byzantine Museum of Ioannina is located inside the castle, in the southeastern acropolis of Itch Kale. Its exhibits include silverware in the so-called Treasury at the center of the citadel and an exhibition on the city’s history in the Fethiye Mosque. The Silversmithing Museum is located in the western bastion tower of the castle’s northeastern acropolis, Its Kale. There, you can learn about traditional techniques for shaping and decorating silver objects. The two museums therefore have different focuses: one on Byzantine exhibits and city history, the other on working with silver.
Underground caves within the citadel can also be accessed from inside the complex. They were formerly used as storage areas and prisons. Check local access conditions before visiting.
Routes and city life
For getting around outdoors, Ioannina offers two routes described in different ways: a walking and cycling path runs from Mavili Square to the village of Katsikas; the established circuit around Lake Pamvotis is 30 kilometers long. The descriptions distinguish a route between two endpoints from a circuit of a specified length, helping you identify each route by its stated form. The Old Market district has retained its commercial character and is among the liveliest streets in Ioannina. Alongside architectural and museum history, routes and urban life therefore offer further themes to consider when planning your trip.
