Anatoli’s history and sacred buildings give the destination a distinct cultural character. If you are planning a trip to Anatoli and looking for hotels, two clearly distinguishable historical perspectives can help put the place into context: the settlement’s origins after 1924 and the construction history of the Chapel of Saint John the Forerunner. Another church adds a more recent founding story to this picture.

Anatoli: Settlement History and Churches

Anatoli was established after 1924 as a settlement for Greek refugees from Asia Minor and Pontus. This origin provides the historical framework for the place and is clearly distinct in time from the chapel’s construction history. Anatoli’s history thus spans the settlement’s founding and the historical dates associated with its churches.

The Holy Church of Divine Wisdom in Anatoli was founded on June 3, 1996, by Theoklitos Setakis, Metropolitan of Ioannina, and has been in operation since 2001. Its founding and start of operations refer to two different points in time: it was founded in 1996 and began operating in 2001. The church therefore represents a more recent chapter in the town’s ecclesiastical history.

The Chapel of Saint John the Forerunner has a much older construction history. It was built in 1473. Architecturally, it is a three-aisled basilica with an elongated rectangular floor plan: “three-aisled” describes its division into three aisles, while the floor plan refers to its elongated rectangular shape. These two details give a brief, concrete impression of the building’s design, without conflating it with the history of the newer church.

An inscription gives 1743 as the chapel’s last renovation. This distinguishes the construction date from the later renovation recorded in the inscription: 1473 is the year it was built, while 1743 is the year given for its last renovation. If you are interested in Anatoli’s history and architecture while planning your trip, you will find two distinct perspectives here: the chapel’s design and dates, and the founding and operational dates of the Church of Divine Wisdom.

Ioannina: Additional Cultural and Natural Context

The castle is a historical area of its own within the wider destination of Ioannina. It stands on a naturally fortified rocky peninsula and is among Greece’s oldest continuously inhabited fortified settlements. The earliest traces of settlement discovered there in archaeological investigations date to the Classical and Hellenistic periods. Underground caves within the citadel were once used as warehouses and prisons; they can be accessed from within the citadel. Before visiting, it is advisable to check local access conditions.

Two museums in the castle also offer different areas of focus. The Byzantine Museum of Ioannina is located in the southeastern acropolis of Itch Kale. It displays silverware in the so-called Treasury at the center of the citadel, as well as an exhibition on the city’s history in the Fethiye Mosque. The Silversmithing Museum is located in the western bastion tower of the northeastern acropolis, Its Kale. Visitors can learn about traditional techniques for shaping and decorating silver objects there. City history, silverwork, and production techniques are presented as distinct topics.

On Ioannina Island, the information center for Lake Pamvotis is housed in a traditional, listed stone building. Its information covers important plants of the lake, as well as the fish, birds, amphibians, and mammals that live there. The island is one of only two inhabited lake islands in Greece. The village there is designated as a settlement of outstanding natural beauty and probably dates back to the 16th century. Before visiting the information center, check its operating arrangements in advance.

Another area of interest is Perama Cave: its visitor and reception center features audiovisual materials and rare paleontological finds. This place adds information about the cave and its natural history to Ioannina’s cultural context.
