Archanes combines Minoan archaeology, a distinctive townscape, and wine tastings with Cretan cuisine. When planning your trip, you can distinguish between local history, archaeological finds, and wine tastings.

Townscape and Minoan Palace History

Neoclassical houses are characteristic of Archanes. Neoclassical describes architecture inspired by classical forms; here, the term identifies a feature of the townscape. Together with the finds, this feature presents a different side of the town from its archaeological history.

In the Turkogeitonia district of the present-day town, the central core of the Neopalatial palace complex of Archanes was excavated. At the archaeological site of Archanes, a Minoan palace complex was discovered, dated to 1900–1450 BC and described as one of the most significant. Two perspectives therefore emerge: Turkogeitonia connects the central core with the present-day district; the dating places the palace complex in time.

Fourni and Juktas in the Surrounding Area

The Fourni cemetery was used for more than 1,500 years, from 2800 to 1200 BC. To date, 26 buildings have been excavated at Fourni, mostly tomb structures, including five tholos tombs. The long period of use and the number of excavated buildings provide different points of reference for understanding the cemetery. In contrast to the palace complex of Archanes, Fourni focuses on the burial site and its architectural forms. Fourni’s timeframe extends beyond the dating of the palace complex and begins much earlier.

Mount Juktas is also part of the area around Archanes. Ancient writers considered it to be the tomb of Zeus; Juktas is also regarded as a sacred mountain shaped like a human figure. There are four sacred caves on the mountain, one in each cardinal direction. Here, a mythological interpretation, the mountain’s described shape, and the caves’ spatial distribution come together as a distinct cultural theme.

Collection and Wine Tastings

For security reasons, the Archaeological Collection of Archanes consists mainly of pottery and stone vessels, as well as faithful copies of significant finds from the surrounding area. Vessels made from these materials and copies are displayed side by side. While the palace and cemetery themes concern buildings and tomb forms, the collection focuses on these materials and reproductions of significant finds.

The Moinoterra winery offers selected wine tastings, focusing on native grape varieties and Cretan cuisine. Wine and Cretan cuisine thus form an additional focus alongside the archaeological themes. Details of the visitor program may change; confirm them directly with the winery before your visit.
